UNCG 1, NAVY 0: Matt Strine scored 11:54 into the match and Peyton Ford made a diving save with 15 minutes left to preserve the shutout as UNCG handed Navy its first loss of the season in men's soccer Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans (4-2-0) won their third straight overall and sixth straight at home. Navy, off to its best start since 2001, entered the night as one of 15 unbeaten, untied teams in Division I.
WAKE FOREST 1, VIRGINIA 0: Andy Lubahn scored the only goal in the 64th minute to lift 14th-ranked Wake Forest over defending national champion and No. 2 Virginia. Wake Forest improved to 2-2-1 and 2-0 in ACC play, while Virginia fell to 3-1-1 and 0-1-1. The loss snapped Virginia's 20-match unbeaten streak.
WILLIAM & MARY 2, HIGH POINT 1: A late comeback fell just short as High Point fell to No. 23 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Karo Okiomah scored his third goal of the season for the Panthers.
GREENSBORO COLLEGE 4, CHOWAN 3 (OT): Richard Hasket scored in overtime as Greensboro College (2-4-1) defeated Chowan (0-6).
MARYLAND 3, N.C. STATE 1: N.C. State fell to fifth-ranked Maryland. Senior Chris Zuerner scored the lone goal for the Wolfpack.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
SOUTHERN VIRGINIA 2, GREENSBORO COLLEGE 0: Senior goalkeeper Katie Allegro recorded six saves in Greensboro College's loss.
CROSS COUNTRY
ELON INVITATIONAL: Mike Koech broke UNCG's record in the 8-k to take top honors in the men's race, while Ashley Schnell won the race for the women's team and UNCG claimed both team titles at the Elon Invitational. Elon finished second in both events. N.C. A&T competed in the men's race but had no team score. The A&T women finished fourth in the five-team field.
VOLLEYBALL
HIGH POINT WINS TWO: Four attackers had double-digit kills and High Point beat Davidson 3-2 at the Nfinity Wildcat Classic. Megan Smith and Audie Gonzalez each had 13 kills and Stephanie Wallin and Courtney Johnk each had 11. In an earlier match, High Point rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Eastern Michigan 3-2.
UNCG SWEEPS: UNCG defeated Norfolk State, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 25-15) in its first match of the day before scoring a 3-1 (25-16, 25-13, 24-26, 25-18) win over Gardner-Webb to win the Spartan Spiketacular title in Fleming Gymnasium.
GREENSBORO COLLEGE SWEEPS: Greensboro College (10-3, 3-0) won its two contests at the USA South volleyball tri-match at Hanes Gym, beating N.C. Wesleyan and Mary Baldwin by 3-0 scores. Seniors Brittany Hunsucker and Karen Riffanacht had 19 spikes and 13 kills, respectively, in the first match. Sha McDuffie had 13 kills and Hunsucker added 11 in the second match.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
UNCG: Sophomore Niltooli Wilkins advanced to today's final in Flight B singles as UNCG picked up three more wins on the second day at the UVA Women's Tennis Fall Invitational.
WOMEN'S GOLF
GREAT SMOKIES INTERCOLLEGIATE: Led by rounds of par from Tara McFadden and Virginia Mayer, Elon shot 300 in the opening round of the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville. The Phoenix is in a four-way tie for fifth place in the 24-team field. Jacksonville State leads with a score of 289. High Point shot 320. Sophomore Audra McShane paced the Panthers with a 76.
