GREENSBORO — There were plenty of heroes for Ragsdale in its 38-35 win over Page on Friday night.

First, there was junior kicker Brad Davis, who kicked his first field goal of his varsity career, a 35-yarder as time expired to win the game. The kick was set up by an interception by sophomore linebacker Duncan Sparks, a first-time starter due to injuries.

“I was thinking 'I’m going to nail this and then I’m going to get tackled by all my teammates,’” said Davis. “I had never been in that situation before. We just stayed with it and worked hard. It was a team effort.”

Sparks, whose brother, Walt, picked off a pass last season against Page (3-1), intercepted a pass in the first half, but the second was by far the biggest play of his young career.

“Coach told me to sit down in the middle,” Sparks said. “... He (Page quarterback) just made a bad play. He was pressured. We’ve still got stuff to work on, but this is definitely something to build on.”

The two heroes helped the Tigers complete a furious rally in the fourth quarter.

Ragsdale (3-1) trailed 35-21 early in the fourth, but a 75-yard scoring drive with 4:26 to play cut the lead to 35-28. The Tigers then recovered an onside kick and quickly went on a 43-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Heavner to Anthony Stewart, tying it 35-35 with 1:55 to play.

After starting at their 22, Pirates quarterback James Summers threw over the middle on the third play and Sparks stepped in front to set up the game-winner.

“We just told them to keep playing, “Ragsdale coach Tommy Norwood. “We didn’t holler and fuss. As young and inexperienced as we are, this can be nothing but a positive builder for us.”

The Page coaches were frantically trying to call a time out to ice Davis, but officials didn’t see their desperate plea.

“They were both on the other side of the field,” Page coach Kevin Gillespie said. “I’m out to the numbers trying to get their attention and not one of them is looking at me. We played really good at times, but not so good at other times. When you don’t execute at certain times, it costs you and that is what happened to us tonight.”

It was the most fantastic ending to a football game that I've ever seen! Our boys didn't give up when things looked grim. They put their heart and soul into winning this game. That is why this win was so exciting. The following is a video of the last one second of the game when the score was tied... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuVZjjY2we0 SO PROUD OF YOU, TIGERS! WHAT AN AMAZING TEAM EFFORT!!!
