THOMASVILLE -- Kate Thornton, a five-year-old battling leukemia, spent her last hours in the bedroom she dreamed of. Kate died Sunday in her new bed in the family’s new home, paid for in part by donations from the community.
The family said Kate passed away around 6 a.m. surrounded by her family and friends.
Kate was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of three. At the time the family of seven lived in a small, three-bedroom home.
Friends and volunteers started Kisses4Kate to raise donations to buy the family a new, larger home. They were able grant that wish last week, moving the family into the new home on Friday where Kat Manzella, Kate’s godmother, said she passed away lying between her mother and father.
A funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 4145 Johnson Street in High Point. Condolences may be sent to the Thornton Family, c/o Kisses4Kate, PO Box 2266, Jamestown, NC 27282.
