WINSTON-SALEM — A man faces charges including kidnapping and larceny after a car he stole with a 2-year-old inside got involved in a wreck.
About 6:19 p.m. Thursday, an officer spotted a gray, 4-door car traveling west on New Walkertown Road in a careless and reckless manner, according to a Winston-Salem police news release.
The officer tried to catch up but lost sight of it.
The police department's communications personnel then dispatched a kidnapping call that had just occurred involving a stolen vehicle and a toddler inside.
The car was found a short time later just south of 5th Street and Dunleith Avenue.
It had been involved in a wreck. The toddler, who was found inside and still secure, was treated for minor injuries, police said.
The toddler was returned to the caretaker, Chrystal Y. Pearson, 46, of 2301 Slater St.
Raymond Levi Roberts was found several blocks away and interviewed by police.
He was later taken to the magistrate's office, where he was charged with larceny of a vehicle, careless and reckless driving, hit and run with personal injury, driving while license was revoked, stop sign violation and first-degree kidnapping.
He was being held in the Forsyth County jail under a $250,000 secured bond.
His court date was set for Sept. 24.
