GREENSBORO — A 14-year-old Pinehurst girl who stole her father’s car caused a three-car accident on Interstate 40 about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. No one was hurt.

The girl, whom police would not identify because she is a minor, faces a safe moving violation and a no operator’s license charge.

She was driving her father’s Ford Explorer west on I-40 just past the High Point Road exit ramp in the inner left lane, when she tried to get in the far left lane, Sgt. C.M. Schultheis said.

She sideswiped a Cadillac, causing the Cadillac to spin around before stopping in the median. The Ford Explorer bounced into a Suburban on its right side, causing the Suburban to hit the bridge guardrail on its passenger side.

The Ford Explorer hit the guardrail and flipped over.

The four people involved in the accident were not injured.

The two right lanes on westbound I-40 were closed briefly while police investigated the crash, and tow truck drivers swept away broken glass and shrapnel and hauled the Ford Explorer away.

Police described the girl as a runaway who took $100 and her father’s car. They did not say where she was going.
