GREENSBORO — Ken Miller was sworn in as the chief of the Greensboro Police Department during a ceremony today.

The ceremony began at 10 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

Miller, 46, was previously the senior deputy chief with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. He had been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police since 1989.

He rose through the ranks from positions in patrol, planning and research, and internal affairs to become deputy chief in 2006.

Miller succeeds former chief Tim Bellamy, who retired July 31. Dwight Crotts was the interim police chief during the transition.

This man needs for all of of us to pray for him and for everyone to give him our full support. Today begins a new chapter for the GPD.

That's absurd. The system is still the same. Just because the figurehead is changed doesn't mean any of the core problems have been addressed or dealt with. Maybe it's a new chapter in his life, but not ours.

It appears to me that the City has been trying to address the core problems but can't get the job done because of people crying racism. Whether or not you are black or white, if you do something that requires termination from your job, then you should be terminated.

Absurd or not, its a new era. And as bad as things have been I hope every one would at least want things to be better. I realize there are still problems and for me it is galling to see Hinson on TV being a spokesman for the department. Fortunately the majority of the men and women in the GPD aren't corrupt. If the Pulpit Forum and all the others will give the new chief a chance (I know the temperature in hell will have to drop for that to happen). When you say its a new chapter in his life, not ours, who are you referring to? The city as a whole, a particular ethnic group, the GPD? Who do you mean?

The Pulpit Forum et al will continue to spread their message of hate for anyone who isn't black. It's what they do, because they don't have anything useful to occupy their time. Fortunately, the majority of Greensboro's citizens (including blacks) realize that those folks are no longer relevant and haven't been for quite some time.
August was a great start to throwing out the bad apples and I suspect that we have seen just the tip of the iceberg. City Manager Young and Chief Miller are simply not going to tolerate the misbehavior with impunity that has occured in the past. It is INDEED a new chapter!!!

It would be nice to think that this guy could bring back the professionalism and respect that the GPD used to command.

Chief or not, he is just one guy however, and there are too many people with a vested interest in stirring the pot and keeping things in constant crisis mode.

To put it bluntly, white liberals (e.g. Ms. Ahern) and black professional agitators (e.g. Nelson Johnson) have found it more personally profitable to kick sleeping dogs and set chips firmly on shoulders rather than do what's best for their community.

"Never let a good crisis go to wastes," as Rham Imanuel once said. Left unsaid was what you do when you don't have a readily available crisis to take advantage of.

The answer of course is that you create it.

It seems that this has become the left's only real purpose now, both nationally and locally. Constantly create fear, uncertainty and doubt. Constantly exacerbate problems. Constantly stir the pot so that people are never able to settle down and concentrate on just living their life in peace.

That is the larger issue that our new Chief has to deal with. I wish him well.

I hope this changes things but I really doubt it, because the problem is the continued cry of racism and hiring someone white will only fuel the fire. White, black who cares as long as the job is being done. Maybe now after 4 long years my sons homicide will be worked. I continue to be told that the internal problems have nothing to do with my son's homicide not being solved but who would want to go to work everyday with all the problems within there department. I have seen first hand the attitude of the dectectives that have worked my son's case. There is one dectective that I would have showed him the door personally. I still say fire the ones that don't want to work and continue to break the law and hire someone that cares about the community.
