MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (AP) — A small earthquake in the Cherokee National Forest shook some residents of Mountain City, although others said they didn't feel it.

Johnson County 911 Director Eugene Campbell told the Johnson City Press that no one was injured in the quake today that measured 2.7 on the Richter scale.

Campbell said the quake happened about 12:30 p.m. The worst damage was broken glass from falling picture frames, he said.

The epicenter was in the Cherokee National Forest, east of Mountain City and about a mile from the North Carolina border.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey website, weak shaking was felt as far as away as Boone, Jefferson and Whitetop, Va.

Geophysicist Don Blakeman said small quakes like the one Monday are fairly common across much of the southeastern United States.

My computer shook and my dog barked at the same time yesterday. Wish I'd made a note of the time it happened, because I remember thinking I wouldn't be surprised if an earthquake happened somewhere close by.
