GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T officials are trying to determine whether its own athletic policies were followed in the aftermath of a student’s death Thursday.

Jospin Milandu, 20, of Knightdale, died after collapsing on the track during team tryouts.

Athletic Director Wheeler Brown said Friday afternoon that university policy called for all students trying out for a varsity sport to have a complete physical on file and sign a waiver to participate.

Brown could not say for sure on Friday whether Milandu had those forms on file. He also said there was no trainer present during the tryouts.

“We’re looking into every aspect of what occurred,” Brown said.

Brown said Milandu collapsed Thursday evening. The athletes had been running laps but Brown could not provide more specifics about the tryouts.

Milandu was taken to Moses Cone Hospital, where doctors determined he died from complications of an elevated heart rate, the university said.

Brown said he hopes to know more about what led up to Milandu’s death and whether all policies were followed by early next week.

The school stated Milandu was participating in a supervised, voluntary open tryout for the track team on campus.

“The Aggie family is deeply saddened by our loss," Chancellor Harold Martin stated in a news release. “Our hearts go out to his family. We have been in close contact with them throughout this unfortunate incident.”

The university will provide counseling for students on campus.
