MASON, Ohio – Greensboro tennis player John Isner retired while leading 5-4 in the first set of his round of 32 singles match against David Nalbandian on Wednesday afternoon at the ATP Cincinnati Masters.
On the first point of the ninth game, Isner was shuffling along the baseline to return a volley when he landed awkwardly on his right ankle. Isner immediately dropped his racket and hobbled to the bench.
After receiving treatment from the trainer, Isner finished the game but clearly was unable to move laterally with any speed. Isner attempted to serve in the 10th game, but retired after falling behind 0-30.
Isner was scheduled to play a doubles match Wednesday night with partner Sam Querrey against No. 4 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi. The doubles match was canceled and Bhupathi and Mirnyi advanced in a walkover.
