Regarding Chip Roth’s column “Different rules for FedEx and UPS are unfair” (Aug. 15):
When Mr. Roth itemized all the things FedEx workers are missing by not choosing to be in the Teamsters Local 391, he left out one significant item: union dues. Yes, union dues are a drag on individuals, businesses and communities.
Mr. Roth is trying to pressure our junior senator to vote for legislation that will bring most businesses and first responders into a national union environment. Notice he did not mention the cost of a work stoppage.
I can personally attest to the last UPS stoppage and the difficulty it created for my company. Our company distributes printed products to businesses in many states. We had committed all of our package shipping business to UPS prior to the strike. When the strike was called, we were left with virtually no package delivery system.
To survive, we had to make other arrangements to get product to our clients at whatever cost. No consideration was given to UPS clients. In fact, the union couldn’t have cared less that its effort to grab more money and power for union officials created difficulty and additional unnecessary expense and delays.
As for our company, we will not commit our transportation needs to a company controlled by a union. We have been there and done that.
