Jamestown seeks bids to replace irrigation system

Jamestown Town Council elected to seek bids for replacing the irrigation system at the Jamestown Park Golf Course Tuesday night.

Town staff has said that, if nothing else, the irrigation system needs to be replaced at the park. Other options were needed, but not as urgent, such as renovating the greens, tees and sand bunkers.

Last month, in-town utility customers received a survey asking what projects, if any, they felt should be undertaken at the park.

Council received results of the survey Tuesday night. Out of 1,299 surveys mailed out, 578, or 45 percent, were returned. Sixty three percent were in support of doing something at the course.

Of those, nearly half supported the entire the project, and a quarter wanted only the irrigation system replace.

Some residents, speaking during public comment periods of the meeting, spoke in support of the golf course, including Linda Marsh, Don Douglass and Tom Tervo.

Tervo asked the council to consider getting bids for the greens as well, so it knows what it would cost to improve them. He said there are new grasses available that cost less to maintain.

Roger Harrison said that the surveys should have included names or addresses to protect against people voting more than once. He said the best option would have been to hold a referendum so votes could be certified.
