SMITHFIELD (AP) — A North Carolina judge says he will decide in the next few days whether to reinstate charges against more than 30 people whose drunken driving charges were illegally dismissed several years ago.
Multiple media outlets report Friday that District Court Judge Joseph Setzer says he'll soon issue a ruling on District Attorney Susan Doyle's request.
Four defense attorneys and a prosecutor pleaded guilty earlier this year to helping fix driving while impaired cases in Johnston County. Doyle says the 33 defendants who had their charges dropped shouldn't benefit from the wrongdoing of their attorneys.
A lawyer for some of the attorneys charged say Doyle's plan is politically motivated. She is up for re-election this year.
