GREENSBORO — Kenneth Miller has been named the next police chief of Greensboro, City Manager Rashad Young announced today in a news release.

Miller is currently a senior deputy chief with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. He will begin work here on Sept. 1.

“We conducted an extensive evaluation process over the past three months and chief Miller’s performance was outstanding,” Young stated in a news release. “I am confident that chief Miller will continue to raise the bar of professionalism and accountability in the GPD. In chief Miller, the city of Greensboro is gaining a leader who recognizes the value of strong and enduring partnerships with the community.”

Miller, 46, has been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police since 1989. He rose through the ranks from positions in patrol, planning and research and internal affairs to become deputy chief in 2006.

Miller's salary has not been determined in Greensboro, according to the city.

Greensboro had narrowed the search to two candidates, Miller and Lisa G. Womack, former police chief of the Elgin (Ill.) Police Department. Both were in Greensboro last week to interview with a community panel.

In a statement earlier this month, Miller said he was excited to be a finalist in Greensboro.

“When I began my career in policing over two decades ago, Greensboro was one of only three cities I considered serving,” he said.

“It was and still remains a family-friendly city known for its high quality of life, excellent schools and richness in diversity. I am honored to be a finalist in consideration.”

Current Police Chief Tim Bellamy is retiring July 31. Assistant Police Chief Dwight Crotts will be interim chief effective Aug. 1.
