Area briefs: High Point golfer wins Carolinas Junior title

High Point's Davis Womble finished with a three-day total of 11-under par 205 and captured the 61st Carolinas Junior Championship at Woodcreek Farms in Elgin, S.C. Womble carded a one-under par 71 on the final day. The top four finishers will compete in the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches in Wilmington on Aug. 14-15.

PARRISH WINS: Ryan Parrish, a rising senior at Grimsley, shot a 4-under par 67 to win the Summer Series Junior Golf Tournament at Tobacco Road in Pinehurst.

TRACK AND FIELD

JUNIOR OLYMPICS: Two area athletes placed high at the AAU Junior Olympics in Sacramento, Calif. Cheyanne Carter of the Greensboro Pacesetters finished fourth in the long jump in the Youth Girls division with a leap of 17-5.5, and Antonio Whitfield of the Pacesetters took ninth in the triple jump in the Intermediate Boys division with a leap of 42-9.75. Competition resumes today and ends Sunday.

TENNIS

N.C. TEAM ROLLS: The North Carolina men's 5.5 team, based out of Greensboro, defeated Team Arkansas 3-0 in the USTA Regionals in Birmingham, Ala. In singles, Tony Mule defeated Gordon Maner 6-0, 6-2; and in doubles, Toby Curtis and Dipesh Rao defeated Eddie Pacheco and Jeff Stone, and Damon Martin and Matt Rowe defeated Case Maner and Darin Phelan 7-5, 6-2. Also in Birmingham, the N.C. 4.5 team beat Georgia 3-2. Cory Orms won 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker to win it for N.C.

YOUTH SPORTS

MUSTANGS WIN: The Carolina Mustangs 8 & under travel baseball team recently won the 2010 USSSA World Series in Charleston, S.C., finishing 7-0 in the tournament. The team compiled a 75-5 record during the 2009-2010 season, winning the N.C. USSSA State Championship, the N.C. Nations State Championship and the S.C. USSSA State Championship.

FUSION ADVANCES: The Carolina Fusion, a 14-and-under girls fast-pitch softball team made up of players from the Burlington and Summerfield areas, remained in the winners' bracket at the USSSA Fast-pitch World Series 14B tournament in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., defeating the Challengers of Columbus, Ga., 3-1.

COLLEGES

SCANDRETT HONORED: Gannon University's Alfonso Scandrett (Northwest Guilford HS) has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court. Scandrett, the son of former N.C. A&T athletics director Alfonso Scandrett, had a 3.49 GPA as a biology/pre-med major. He averaged 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Erie, Pa., school.

GREENSBORO COLLEGE: Haley Newsome (North Johnston HS) has joined the Pride's women's soccer program. She is transferring from Louisburg College.

CLEMSON: Clemson officials have reported seven NCAA secondary violations from January to July. The school did not detail the names of the coaches, the sports or athletes involved.

COASTAL PLAIN LEAGUE

HiTOMS 7, MUSTANGS 1: Zak Wasserman went 2 for 5 with a single and a two-run home run to lead the Thomasville HiToms past the Martinsville Mustangs in Coastal Plain League baseball. Teammate Cass Hargis tripled, walked twice and scored two runs.

COPPERHEADS 10, GRIZZLIES 2: Hunter Ridge collected three hits to lead the Asheboro Copperheads past the Gastonia Grizzlies at Sims Legion Park.

SPORTS MEDICINE

FREE PROGRAM: About 12 places remain for area coaches and others involved in high school and middle school athletics who are interested in learning about various sports medicine topics through a free two-day program presented by the Cornerstone Health Care Foundation. The program runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 3-4 at Cornerstone's administrative offices at Providence Place in High Point. COLLEGE FOOTBALL

BIG SOUTH: Gardner-Webb receiver James Perry III, a graduate of Dudley High School, was named to the preseason all-Big South Conference team. Liberty was tabbed to win the conference championship.
