GREENSBORO — Wyndham Championship officials said Tuesday they expect an announcement soon about the future of the tournament's sponsorship contract.
The four-year deal between the tournament and Wyndham will end after this season, but the parties suggested an extension of the agreement is forthcoming. This year's tournament is Aug. 19-22 at Sedgefield Country Club.
"Things look good for an extension," tournament director Mark Brazil said. "It might be before the tournament, but it might be a little after. We're confident. We have a great relationship with Wyndham."
In an uncertain economy and with several tournaments on the PGA Tour nervous about their futures, the Wyndham sponsorship is seen as one of the strongest. Kevin Rinker, the sports marketing director of Wyndham, said the company sees no reason why it would want that to end.
"We enjoy each other's company as well as being good business partners," Rinker said. "We love this community and being a part of this community."
Bobby Long, the president of the Piedmont Triad Charitable Trust, the board that runs the tournament, said he believes an announcement will come "sooner than later."
"We'd like to get that behind us," Long said. "We have a wonderful relationship with Wyndham, and we have no reason to think otherwise. I know some of the people involved in the other tournaments, and I talk with them all the time. People are talking about the economy right now, and I say there's definitely a nervousness out there."
