Graduation rate up

GREENSBORO — Students who crossed the graduation stage just a few weeks ago raised Guilford County Schools’ graduation rate to its highest point in four years.

The 80.7 percent graduation rate is likely to be among the best in the state for metropolitan school districts and was aided by a record 12 schools with better than 90 percent rates, five of which recorded perfect graduation totals.

Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green said he was “very pleased” but wants to see every school with better than 90 percent graduation rates. Only two high school programs in the district reported lower than an 80 percent graduation rate; Andrews High had a 77 percent rate and The Academy at High Point Central posted a 60 percent rate.

Isn't it a little odd that this HPC Academy reached four out of five goals in its AYP standards, but only 60 percent of its students graduated? Look at this "story" and the AYP statistics and you'll be scratching your head.

Children whose parents keep them out of school typically bomb those tests.
