East-West: Aggressive West wins in girls soccer

GREENSBORO — Charlotte Catholic coach Gary Hoilett proved to be a prophet in the N.C. Coaches’ Association East-West All-Star girls soccer game.

Before the game, Hoilett said the team that was more successful pressing the action would win. The West squad took its coach’s words to heart and emerged with a dominating 4-1 win Tuesday night at UNCG.

“The first thing I said to them before we walked on the field was that every person on the field was an attacking player,” Hoilett said. “I want us to get forward, to attack and to move the ball and knock it forward as quickly as we can.”

The East squad was strong early but was unable to get off any quality shots, and the West scored first in the 18th minute.

Brandi Baldwin (Monroe Sun Valley HS) hammered a deflection into the lower left corner. Just six seconds later, MVP Alex Kachulis (Matthews Weddington HS) scored when she sneaked a ball under the crossbar. The goal was set up by an accurate centering pass by Northeast Guilford’s Alexi Saganich, one of five Guilford County players on the West.

Then the West and its superior athletic ability started to take over.

Ragsdale goalie Alex Kubrick started the game but was removed after the West team took a two-goal lead.

The only goal scored by the East came when her replacement, Kristen Lawson (Charlotte Providence HS), came out to the top of the box and was unable to corral the ball. Lexi Miller (Raleigh Broughton HS) knocked the ball free and then hurdled Lawson, ultimately guiding the ball into the empty net.

West took the 2-1 lead into intermission, but Hoilett told his team the game was far from over.

“No one says it has to be easy, you simply have to get the job done,” Hoilett said. “I told them more than likely the team that scores the next goal is the team that will break the game open and run away with it. Fortunately we got one in the first five minutes.”

Grimsley’s Marissa Manaois-Copley had a shot on goal blocked. Teammate Ashley Aragona (Waxhaw Marvin Ridge HS) banged home the rebound for a 3-1 lead at the 42:18 mark.

The final West score came when Kachulis, the game’s MVP, placed a pass on the foot of Northwest Guilford’s Jennifer McGorty. The Elon-bound McGorty, who scored 28 times her senior season, appropriately ended her high school career with a goal.

It was the third win in the last four years for the West squad.
