Tuesday, June 29, 2010
(Updated 3:54 pm)

Fans of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Cheerwine beverages are in for a sweet treat: The companies have partnered to create a limited-edition doughnut.

The "Cheerwine Kreme Filled Doughnuts" hit store shelves in the Carolinas on Thursday.

They're available only in July.

Krispy Kreme and Cheerwine, both North Carolina-born brands, are delivering the first batch of doughnuts to the state capitol Wednesday in Raleigh.

Gov. Bev Perdue will be on hand to accept them.

The irony - this story posted immediately to the right of the story announcing NC ranks 10th in adult obesity.

Definitely not irony, but funny.

We're debating the meaning of "irony" now?

From dictionary.com:
2b ... a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc.

Moreover, I think the original post was noting this seemed a bit of "situational irony," that is, that the newspaper was reporting on NC's obesity problem, while juxtaposing another article that celebrates one potential cause. That the articles were likely not situated together on purpose adds to the irony, e.g., the N&R was celebrating a food that is causal to obesity while reporting on said obesity.

If that's not irony, I don't know what is!!

I wondered when someone would top that KFC (is it?) sandwich that replaces the bread with fried chicken...

Sometimes there is a fine line between smart and stupid. This sounds like the latter.

Please send some to Louisiana! I am stuck in this state without my beloved Cheerwine. Krispy Kreme is never hot and fresh. What is a displaced tarheel to do?

Now if they cover that in sausage gravy you'll really have something, I can just feel my arteries clogging up can't you?

How in the heck is this considered news? This is simply "free" advertising for Crispy Cream and Cheerwine, both of which fatten us up so we have to buy more cholesterol meds!

Once again, this is not news, its an advertising joke!

you mean like the "news article" they did on the new Tanger shopping mall opening in Mebane and the free coupons they were offering to rich old people?

First of all, it's "Krispy Kreme." Second, was the reporting on the new iPhone just a "advertisement" for Apple? What about new car models; just ads for the car companies? Reporting on a new product being offered by a local company is NEWS, not "advertising." Now lighten up, and go get yourself a KRISPY KREME Cheerwine donut!! Sheesh!

I live in Lexington, which is north of Salisbury (Cheerwine) and south of Winston-Salem in NC (Krispy Kreme) Just next town from both products. I have enjoyed both all my life. Can't wait to give this a try. Obviously some of the people who wrote comments have never tried either, and don't know what a good thing is.

This illustrates the problem with a lot of people today. No one is holding a gun to their heads, making them buy either product. But they just can't stand the thought of someone enjoying them self. If it's not gloom and doom, they aren't happy.
