Lightning hits log house in Madison, sparks fire

— A fire sparked by lightning damaged a log house used as a site for corporate retreats and wedding receptions.

The Rockingham County Fire Marshal's Office said Bonamanzee at 2741 N.C. 704, east of the town limits, was hit by lightning at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The fire started in the basement and did extensive damage there. The rest of the structure was damaged by smoke.

The business owners arrived shortly after the fire started and called 911. The eight local fire departments who responded needed about an hour to bring the blaze under control. The last fire unit left the scene at about 1 a.m. today.

No injuries were reported.
