Video shows N.C. congressman grabbing man

(Updated 1:24 pm)

A video shows a North Carolina congressman grabbing the arm and the back of a neck of a young man.

The video, posted Friday on YouTube, shows an encounter between Rep. Bob Etheridge, a Democrat from Lillington, and the unidentified man, whose face is obscured in the video.

The video apparently was shot last week outside a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., at which Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was the headline speaker.

In the video, Etheridge is asked by someone off-camera: "Do you fully support the Obama agenda?"

Etheridge approaches the man with the camera and repeatedly asks, "Who are you?" The camera jerks and falls to the ground.

The video then shows Etheridge grabbing the right wrist and later the back of the neck of a man who appears to be in his 20s. Etheridge continues to ask for the man's identity. The man says only that he is a student but does not reveal his name or school.

Off-camera, a second man says he is there for an undisclosed project.

Etheridge on his Congressional website today apologized for his reaction.

He released the following written statement: “I have seen the video posted on several blogs. I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse.”

Fortunately (or unfortunately) it is AMBUSH season for politicians. How many politicians can you get in a season? Hopefully, this may actually do some good as it will expose many of those without character.

Well, two things.

First of all, this video is heavily edited. We don't know what happened before this video was shot, how long these "students" were following the Congressman, or if the clip shown is all that actually happened. It could be these guys were follwing Etheridge around for quite sometime before this, and he was feeling harrassed and stalked.

That being said, he had no right to put his hands on anyone. He should have called a cop. He's lucky if he's not charged with battery.

Why "students" . Do you have doubts or suspicions?

Panacea

I do have doubts and suspicions. The video looks and feels like an ambush. If these young men were really doing a project for school, then why didn't they answer the man's question? There is no reason for them to not have answered the question.

If I were their teacher, I would sit them down for a long talk about ethics and etiquette.

Regardless of the extent to which this video was edited, there's no reasonable excuse for justifying Etheridge's choice to go physical.
However, I'm highly suspicious of the video. If I read correctly elsewhere, this footage first appeared on Andrew Breitbart's website. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he financed it in its entirety and had his people edit it to hit just the right Teabagger nerve. After all, we do recall the ACORN hooker video, right? The one that effectively ended ACORN, despite being later revealed to have been a complete fraud (also the work of Bretbart) that had been heavily doctored?
I can already predict the next several comments, all of which submitted by people who are 100% incorrect about nearly everything:
Democrat- "Uh... they were in his face. What would YOU do? Why wouldn't they answer him?"
Repub- "Obama! Socialism! Sarah Palin! Nazi! Glenn Beck! Tea Party for the win in 2010, baby!"

This punk is looking for a time slot on FOX with Sean Hannity.
This is too fishy. He doesn't identify the school he is from, he never gives his name, he blur's his face and does some really extensive editing. He nearly wet's his britches when Congressman Etheridge pulled him closer for a hug. Good job Congressman for standing up to those jerks.

I haven't met Etheridge. Does he always have that look in his eyes, or is he quite inebriated in this video?

the world now sees the democrat party exposed. angry, bitter, godless fools. bob etheridge, had he any sense of decency or morality would resign. i do imagine this video will resurface closer to november. along with another showing the angry democrat raging against a voter at a town hall meeting.

Etheridge's behavior may have been inappropriate, but not worthy of his resignation. There are extenuating circumstances . . . we don't know the whole story.

etheridge is but the latest example. the union thugs who beat down the black man. the ones who went escorted to the bakers house, scaring his kid. the guy in greensboro who punched the tea party member and his wife. all caught on tape everyone. you guys are moving extremely fast to the hard left panacea. we knew you would. we also know where this is going. by the tens of millions we are preparing. the lord asked for patience. we have shown it, but our patience runs thin. all know who you people are now. like your predecessors, you will be defeated.

Etheridge's behavior is worthy of jail time so why is it not worthy of his resignation? Watch the whole video - it's quite shocking.

Etheridge, another Bev Fartonyou Perdue and Obama protegee. He hasn't seen a tax he doesn't like and his arrogance has always shown, if you look. Yes, he always has that look in his eyes or face.He reminds me a lot of Tim Valentin a former US House Rep who actually cussed me on camera on the White House steps many years ago. Not that I hold much difference between democrats and republicans, but Fartonyou Perdue has to go from NC politics and so does Etheridge. Then maybe Kaye Fagan or is it, er Hagan? Too many taxes, to many freedoms lost or now constrained. More laws and taxes is NOT the answer! It's past time to throw the taxing bums out, republican or democrat. But here are 3 of the worst from NC......

While Rep. Etheridge should have shown a bit more restraint, the fact that these "students" have yet to be identified makes it clear that the congressman was set up. The TeaBaggers must've figured that whoever their guy is in Etheridge's district needed some help.

They're probably not being identified because some union thug would be out to burn their family's house down if they knew who they were! If you watched the whole video it would be clear that Etheridge is insane and didn't need anyone to set him up.

I wonder if a Republican had done this what the reaction would be. Probably presented in media as a crazy. This is another example of Dems attempting to silence their critics using bullying tactics.

Don't read much, do you?
How do you think the media are describing Etheridge today? The answer: CRAZY.

Mr. Ethridge had the guy's hand in a defensive hold. He couldn't have grabbed the man's hand like that if the man hadn't offered it to him. It is a typical hapkido defensive hold. My bet is that the man reached out to Mr. Ethridge in an aggressive manner. Of course, this was edited out. The harrasser should have identified himself.

People in this conversation hate taxes, that's for sure. I once lived in a place where taxes were really, really low: Mexico. The infrastructure there was terrible. If we don't start investing in our infrastructure, we're going to pass down a pile of ruins for the next generation to fix and repair. It's totally irresponsible! Most people don't understand that the corporate tax in NC is one of the lowest in the nation, and the federal income tax today is much lower than it was during the Reagan administration. Our children are going to pay for what we squandered away.

Panacea,
Please notice the moving cars!
Then tell us the video is edited.
I go to the same far left internet sites as you, they tell you what to blog.
If a tea party patriot had did this this paper and the far left media, would be having 24-7 on this.
This guy is a complete jerk.

June 14, 2010 - 4:45 pm EDT

Please notice the EDITS (cuts, inserts). This is how an intelligent person, as well as an utter retard, would know that the video is edited. You apparently fall somewhere below that part of the spectrum.
And I don't know which sites you visit, but I've not been to one yet today that hasn't had this as one of the leading headlines (except for the W-S Journal, but they're excused because they have no staff except for a couple of monkeys and a mildly retarded child).

OK, so, after reading the comments about a set-up/ambush and video editing.... why did the ccongressman apologize? In his apology, did he say one word about defending himself? His words AND actions will say more than the video.

Blair

So, Congressman, what is the answer to the legitimate question? Do you fully support Obama's agenda?
