RALEIGH (AP) — A retired Duke University financial executive has surpassed Mike Krzyzewski as the highest-paid person by the school — for one year, anyway.

The Associated Press on Tuesday obtained Duke's most recent IRS documents for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2009. The filings indicate Duke paid Eugene McDonald a lump-sum deferred compensation payment of $5.5 million that accrued during 23 years.

McDonald retired nearly 10 years ago after creating and heading Duke Management Co., the school's endowment investment office.

Krzyzewski made nearly $4.2 million in 2008-09 with a base salary of nearly $2 million. The Hall of Famer annually ranks as the highest-paid employee at the school, which has a longstanding policy of not discussing contracts or compensation.

I guess he will make even more this year after winning the National Championship.

When Pro players make multi millions, this pay is an insult to someone like coach k. If not for great coaches like him, there would be no NBA. DEMAND A RAISE COACH!!!!!

"If not for great coaches like him, there would be no NBA. DEMAND A RAISE COACH!!!!!" This statement isn't logical. The NBA existed before and will exist after Coach K. As a matter of fact, Duke's most recent player of the year award recipients (Laettner and Ferry) had journeymen careers in the NBA. They never matched their collegiate levels. That being said. Coach K is a very good college coach.

Wasn't Redick a more recent national player of the year?

Yes. In my rush to prove my point, I posted some sloppy info. E. Brand, S. Battier, J Williams and JJ Redick are the most current Duke players to have won the national player of the year award.

When is dcolin going give us all a lecture on our "wrong" priorities by posting positive about Coach K (who is usually Duke's HIGHEST PAID EMPLOYEE)?

I know some colleges that would become solvent with that.

..seeing that this is a private university, I have absolutely no problems with this....I would, however, like to know how much Roy Williams is getting, since IT is on the NC taxpayer's dime....
