RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — An envelope containing a white powder has been taken to a state laboratory after it was removed from North Carolina's old Capitol building, where Gov. Beverly Perdue works.
Perdue's office said an administrative assistant to Chief of Staff Britt Cobb opened the envelope shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, leading to an evacuation. Perdue spokeswoman Chrissy Pearson said authorities may know what the powder is Tuesday morning.
Authorities asked visitors to leave the 170-year-old building, which includes offices for Perdue and the old House and Senate chambers. A hazardous materials team arrived to investigate.
Perdue didn't touch the letter and was at a bill-signing in the House chamber before the envelope became public. Two workers who handled the letter also were being checked out.
