HIGH POINT — A start-up biotech company is considering High Point for a new laboratory.

Apixir Pharma Sciences is also examining locations elsewhere in the Triad and in New Jersey and California, according to a news release from Loren Hill, president of the High Point Economic Development Corp.

The company plans to create at least 25 jobs during its first three years, including scientist and researcher jobs with an average wage between $40,000 and $50,000. The company would add at least $2 million to the tax base.

Apixir has asked High Point to consider incentives for up to $35,000 for the project. The High Point City Council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the High Point Municipal Building, 211 S. Hamilton St. Any incentives authorized would be subject to a performance agreement containing benchmarks the company would have to meet.

The company would research, develop and manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients and other products in the development cycle.

Three partners have formed the company:

  • Sreenivasa Eturi – director of strategy, who currently lives in New Jersey;
  • Ashok Bhandari – director of business development, who currently lives in California, and
  • Murty Arimilli –director of R&D, who lives in Guilford County.

This is pure corporate welfare. If Guilford County is the best place for this company, it will relocate here regardless of incentives.

It is telling that locations under consideration are the home locales of three of the company leaders. They're just angling for free money.

Tell them to take a hike.

Yes! Great idea! Why don't you sale you idea to 25 good, hard working people in the Triad that just happen to be currently unemployed! Life is good as long as your are have a job and are able to provide for you family. Can you be any more selfish?

Can you? Do you think it's OK for the county or city to spend millions of dollars so 25 people can have jobs that pay 30-40K, without benefits?

I don't think that's a good use of my tax dollars.

Usually Michaels doesnt take this sort of stuff to the media like this -UNLESS he knows there is some opposition. It looks like he's trying to get public opinion (and the desire and despiration for jobs) to sway Council.
They did say that the company is a start-up, so it's not surprising that there's no website. BUT if I were on council, I WOULD NOT give $35k to a start-up as an incentive. -Only a company with a strong track record.
The politics Michaels is playing may come back to bite him --assuming that was the strategy of course.
