Pool B: No. 7 N.C. State 13, No. 2 Clemson 8
Site: NewBridge Bank Park, Greensboro
Why N.C. State won: The Wolfpack had Clemson singing the two-out blues. N.C. State strung together five consecutive RBI singles with two out in the sixth inning, then scratched out two more two-out RBI hits in the seventh. The 7-for-8 streak in those innings staked State to a 10-4 lead
Top N.C. State performances: CF Kyle Wilson 4-for-5, HR, 4 RBIs, 4 R. ... 3B Andrew Ciencin 3-for-6, 3 RBIs. ... 2B Dallas Poulk 2-for-5, HR, 3 RBIs. ... P Alex Sogard 6 IP, 3 ER.
Top Clemson performances: LF Jeff Schaus 3-for-4, HR, 4 RBIs. ... DH Brad Miller 3-for-5, double, 3 R. ... PH Will Lamb 3-run HR.
Play of the game: On a night chock full of offense, N.C. State 2B Dallas Poulk made an acrobatic defensive play in the first inning that killed a Clemson rally and seemed to set the tone for the Wolfpack. With one out, a runner at second and Clemson leading 1-0, Poulk made a diving catch on clean-up hitter Kyle Parker's line drive. Poulk rolled up and from his backside threw to second to force Jeff Schaus and complete a double play. State scored two runs in its next at-bat to take its first lead.
He said it: "With two outs, honestly, we know the inning's not over. We have such a good lineup that if we just get runners on base, then we're going to score runs with two outs. In the seventh, I got on and Dallas hit a home run. And in the big inning, all the runs were scored with two outs. We're a very confident group of hitters." — Kyle Wilson, N.C. State leadoff hitter.
