(Updated 8:10 am)

Pool A: No. 1 Virginia 6, No. 8 Boston College 4

Where: NewBridge Bank Park, Greensboro

Why Virginia won: Timely hitting. CF Jarrett Parker hit a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth as the top-ranked Cavaliers came from behind to win. The Cavs scored six earned runs on five hits, stranding just three baserunners.

Top Virginia performances: 2B Phil Gosselin 2-for-4 with HR and 2 walks. RF Dan Grovatt 2-run HR. RP Kevin Arico faced two batters in ninth, striking out both for 16th save.

Top Boston College performances: P Pat Dean struck out 6 and allowed just 2 hits in 7 innings. Both hits were HRs, and Dean left with a 4-3 lead after 111 pitches. 3B Anthony Melchionda 3-for-4 with 2 doubles.  RF John Spatola long 2-run HR onto Eugene Street.

Worth noting: Trailing 4-3 in the eighth, Virginia pinch-hitter Stephen Bruno drew a lead-off walk and took second on pinch-hitter Keith Werman's two-strike sacrifice bunt to start the winning rally.

Play of the game: With runners at second and third and one out in the ninth inning, Virginia changed pitchers. Kevin Arico, who is among the national leaders in saves, came on and struck out the next two hitters to end it.

He said it: "When you get ahead in the (count) you've got a little bit more room to play with. If you miss down, you live to make another pitch. I was fortunate enough for guys to swing right over the top of my slider." — Kevin Arico, Virginia's closer, on striking out the final two hitters with sliders out of the strike zone.
