Why Miami won: The Canes hit three home runs and got solid work from freshman pitchers Eric Whaley and E.J. Encinosa and sophomores Sam Robinson and Daniel Miranda.

Top Miami performances: Whaley threw 66 pitches in five innings (his longest outing of the season) and gave up two earned runs. ... DH Michael Broad 3-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs. ... CF Nathan Melendres 2-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs.

Top FSU performances: CF Tyler Holt 2-for-4, double. ... 2B Devon Travis 1-for-3, triple.

Worth noting: FSU started its ace, left-hander Sean Gilmartin, who gave up seven earned runs in 6 2/3 innings and threw 120 pitches. ... In his fourth plate appearance, ACC Player of the Year Yasmani Grandal pulled a foul ball over the GoTriad Grandstand in left field. Two pitches later, the Miami catcher went the opposite way for an RBI double.

Play of the game: Leading 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Miami broke open the game when 3B Harold Martinez hit a three-run homer.
