JAMESTOWN — Two children remain hospitalized Monday from a traffic collision Sunday with a Highway Patrol car that killed a Thomasville woman and an 11-year-old girl.
Trooper J.D. Goodnight was traveling north on Business 85 at 11:44 a.m. when he clocked a small passenger vehicle, a blue Buick Skylark, traveling south at 80 mph in a 55 mph zone, said Trooper Greg Ingram.
Goodnight crossed the median and turned south to pursue the vehicle, Ingram said. He said Goodnight turned on his blue lights.
Sandra G. Allmond, 55, was driving a maroon Honda Accord, which was in the northbound left turning lane waiting to turn onto River Road, Ingram said.
The Honda turned into the path of the trooper’s car and they collided. The trooper’s car ran off the road to the right and hit a tree.
Allmond was killed in the crash. Taylor Strange, an 11-year-old friend of the family, died Sunday night at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Two other children who were passengers in the car are in fair condition at the Winston-Salem hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said as of 9 p.m. One is Allmond's grandson, 11-year-old Elijah Allmond. The other, 9-year-old Steven Strange, is a friend of the family.
The trooper was treated for cuts and bruises at an area hospital. Ingram said Goodnight has been placed on paid injury leave for an unknown amount of time.
The investigation is ongoing.
