Southeast's offense stalls in playoff loss

— Everything seemed to be lining up right for Southeast Guilford.

An upset in the first round of the Class 4-A baseball playoffs gave the Falcons a home game in round two. And an upset in the second round in another bracket set up a potential home playoff game in round three.

But Davie County and pitcher Ryan Foster ruined the hopes of Southeast with a 6-3 win Thursday night.

Foster pitched a complete game and had things completely under control until the final inning, by which time the War Eagles had a 6-1 lead. Foster had six strikeouts, as his pinpoint control allowed him to take advantage of a consistent low and outside strike call by the home plate umpire.

"You have to give their pitcher credit, he kept us off balance with a lot of change-ups," Falcons coach Dave Beasley said.

"You want the umpire to be consistent, but you also want the umpire to keep the standard strike zone and not vary it. It seemed like he had a low consistent strike zone."

Southeast had runners on base in every inning, but it did not get on the scoreboard until the fifth. Even when the Falcons scored, a blunder kept things from developing.

Tiger Miller drove in Josh Tobias with a rocket that ricocheted past War Eagles shortstop Carson Herndon. The ball wound up in left field, but Miller was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

"We would get runners on and then made a couple of baserunning mistakes, Beasley said. "We just didn't get that crucial hit that I felt would get us over the hump."

Meanwhile, solid relief pitching by Ty Powell, who struck out four batters in 21/3 innings, kept Southeast within striking distance the rest of the game.

After two outs, the Falcons put two runners on base in the seventh inning. Tobias scored his second run of the game on a throwing error by Corey Randall, and an RBI single by Tanner Hodgin brought the tying run to the plate.

But Foster induced a fielder's choice to end the season for Southeast.

"Great season, my first year on the varsity level," Beasley said. "I couldn't have asked for better guys. The enthusiasm they showed and the hustle they showed. I hate it for them because you feel like they were good enough to go a long way. We beat so many good teams this year, our schedule was tough and we played tons of playoff teams. When you go 19-6, I'd say it was a very good record."
