WINSTON-SALEM — Two drivers were killed in a head-on collision early this morning, police said. One of the drivers was headed northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 52.
About 12:54 a.m. Thursday, David William Byrd was operating a 1998 Oldsmobile south in the left lane of U.S. 52 when his car crashed into a 1994 Oldsmobile driven by Amick Lee Horn, according to Winston-Salem police.
Horn, 28, of 1221 Shelia Court in Rural Hall, was operating a 1994 Oldsmobile north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 52, according to Winston-Salem police.
Both cars collided head-on in the left lane of U.S. 52 south approximately 300 feet south of Germantown Road.
Horn was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Byrd, 62, of 2319 Innsbruck Lane in Bethania, was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He later died from his injuries.
Speed does not appear to be a factor, although police were still investigating the cause of the crash as of early Thursday morning.
Southbound U.S. 52 at Germanton Road was closed for approximately four hours.
It was Winston-Salem's fifth and sixth traffic fatality so far this year.
