Kids: Go run in the street.
The after-school GO FAR program, led by physical education teachers, will hold its eighth 5K at 9 a.m. Saturday in High Point.
More than 1,100 runners, mostly 9- and 10-year-olds but including parents and teachers, from Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point are expected.
The 3.1-mile race, which will start at Showplace, will culminate 10 weeks of training for the participants.
High Point physician assistant Robin Lindsay developed the 10-week curriculum in 2003 as an accessible and low-cost answer to the childhood obesity epidemic and its related health complications.
"We created the program to teach kids that they can set and reach goals, and that being active feels good," Lindsay said in a news release. "GO FAR influences the whole family. Moms and dads start to run with their kids and make healthier choices in the grocery store. We've seen a great ripple effect."
Galloway in High Point
Jeff Galloway, the creator of the Galloway run-walk-run method and a Runner's World magazine columnist, will visit High Point on May 20 to talk about lifelong fitness in a benefit for GO FAR.
The event at the Natuzzi showroom (130 W. Commerce Ave., High Point), will include finger foods, beer and wine. Tickets are $20 for one, $30 for two (or free to all GO FAR donors of $75 or more) and will help GO FAR reach more at-risk children.
Buy tickets at Off 'N Running Sports, 2201 Joan Ave., Greensboro, or by contacting Lisa Watts at lwatts5@triad.rr.com.
