Obama, first lady start N.C. vacation with BBQ, hike

Friday, April 23, 2010
(Updated Saturday, April 24 - 7:47 am)

ASHEVILLE (AP) — First stop for the first couple's weekend vacation on Friday was a roadside restaurant that President Barack Obama visited during the final month of his White House campaign. First meal on the trip: barbecued ribs.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama landed in the Blue Ridge Mountains and made a quick stop at Twelve Bones Smokehouse on the way to their resort. The White House said the first couple ate ribs, macaroni and cheese, greens, baked beans, corn bread and corn pudding and washed it down with sweet tea.

And then a short time later, they set about working off the meal; the Obamas went on a mountain hike.

This trip was meant to be vacation, and Obama didn't even plan to make calls on the fierce debate over financial reform legislation in the Senate, press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters at the White House on Friday.

"Knock on wood," Gibbs said.

On Obama's previous visit to the city, in October 2008, the then-senator prepared for a debate and rallied supporters — and lamented he couldn't play golf.

"What a spectacular place," Obama said during the Oct. 5, 2008, stop in Asheville.

"The only thing I don't like about it is that I had to drive by the golf course, and it looks really nice. And my staff won't let me play. I'm going to have to come back."

And back, he is. Not just for the golf: The president always keeps his eye on politics.

Obama was the first Democratic presidential candidate to win North Carolina since Jimmy Carter in 1976. He defeated Republican Sen. John McCain by just 0.4 percentage points in a state that favored President George W. Bush's re-election by 12 percentage points four years earlier. The Democratic nominee's aggressive campaign — and volunteers from bordering South Carolina — helped turn North Carolina in Obama's favor.

As Democrats' fortunes have sunk, though, Obama's trip to North Carolina reflects a nod to a middle-class vacation — in contrast to last year's trips to Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and his native Hawaii.

Asheville, a city of about 73,000 residents, is home to the Vanderbilt family's Biltmore Estate, a tourist draw, along with scores of art galleries and restaurants.

The White House says the Obamas have no public plans while in North Carolina, although the president will speak at Sunday's memorial in Beckley, W.Va., for the victims of the worst U.S. coal mine disaster in 40 years. The April 5 explosion at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine took 29 lives.

The Obamas plan to return to Washington on Sunday evening.

They need to stop in the Triad and tell us how we are going to get all our construction and development jobs back in NC. When are we going to get our unemployment rate from 12% to 3.5%? People in NC want less government and less taxes.

The article doesn't mention that the states Rotary Club assembly and charity fundraiser events were kicked out of Grove Park to make room for the President. I guess golfing is more important than charity.

There have been over 750 new jobs announced in the N&R this week and almost a thousand last week. This is really good news for the people of North Carolina. But this is really bad news for the whack job right, the Rush Limbos that want our country to fail.

If Obozo and the democRATs had done nothing we would be much better off. All respectable economist say th economy was set to make a self adjusting turn around. Obozo and the democraps just made things worst. You would know this had you stopped listening to Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann.

White House Economic Advisers Admit Stimulus a Failure
October 23rd, 2009 Karl Munchausen Leave a comment Go to comments
WASHINGTON: Yes, you read that headline right. White House economic advisers admit that the stimulus is a failure in terms of economic growth and creating jobs. Christina Romer, Chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers testified before Congress’ Joint Economic Committee on Thursday. Her testimony (here) rebuts White House and Congressional assertions that the Stimulus package has just started to do its job, and that the best is yet to come. Contrary to party-line propaganda she had this to say about the Stimulus Package:

Turns out this so-called stimulus package was nothing other than a cobbled-together mish-mash of Democratic pet projects designed to bring back the bacon to Democratic districts and ensure their reelection prospects. (Do you remember how fast they had to vote on it? Less than 12 hours was given by Leadership to let Congress and the American people read the final bill before the final vote.)

Problem with sites like this, they cherry pick their information. The very name of the site "National Institute of Prevarication" demonstrates its bias. It is a political site, pure and simple.

I prefer Fact Check.org because it is not biased one way or the other.

When it comes to evaluting the stimulus, I found a business site, recovery.org to be most useful; since its conclusions are intended to guide business owners seeking to do business with governments at the local, state, and federal level, its conclusions were much more realistic and detailed. For example, currently the stimulus has over 66,000 programs going, worth about 195 billion.

Also, bear in mind the stimulus was designed by the Bush administration. Obama pushed for a vote on the bill as it was because he realized that there was not time to waste in trying to get the recession under control. I didn't like the bailouts; I hated them and still do. But I have to acknowledge they were necessary. Now we just need to pass financial reform so that Wall Street is no longer "too big to fail."

'"The Rush Limbos that want our country to fail". Next time I should refer to you simply as "anti-American's" who wish ill will for our country and hopes that our country fails." Feel better?

BW, even conservative economists disagree with you; the government had to step in when Lehman Bros imploded. If they had not, we'd be in another Great Depression. Bad as things got and in some instances still are, it could have been far, far worse.

JGALT

April 23, 2010 - 7:45 pm EDT

The $862 Billion non-stimulus stimulus was designed by Obama and the Democrats--TARP was the successful Bush/ Paulsen/ Geitner program. Lehman Brothers failed and deserved to. The proposed financial regulations do not address the too big to fail issue, do not address the causes of the financial crisis and do not address Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The investigatory body tasked with identifying the causes of the crisis has not issued it's report and will not before Democrats ram through stupid new law. The economic downturn began its cyclical upturn last year when I pointed it out. "The rooster crowing (Obama) is not responsible for the sun rising". The policies of this administration prolonged the crisis, the cyclical downturn and unemployment.
