ARCHDALE — A woman was charged with driving while impaired after she hit a construction worker on Interstate 85 on Tuesday.

Annasue Stanley Lamphier, 40, was charged with driving while impaired, failure to maintain a lane and careless and reckless driving. She lives in Grover, a Cleveland County town near the South Carolina border.

Archdale police identified the worker hit in the accident as 23-year-old John Christopher Lindquist of Smithfield. He is listed in serious condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Police said Lamphier was driving a 1986 Chevrolet van south on I-85 when she ran off the road to the left and went into the median. The van came back on the road, crossed both lanes of traffic and hit a tractor-trailer driven by a Durham man. Lamphier's vehicle then veered to the left and hit the worker, who was painting lines along the road.

The incident happened at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday near N.C. 62.

The accident report said police suspect impairment by some sort of drug — not alcohol — but the report does not say what that drug might be.
