City leaders kill amphitheater project

Wednesday, April 7, 2010
(Updated Thursday, April 8 - 5:36 am)

In a split vote, City Council members killed plans to build an amphitheater at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

The Coliseum staff started to build the project last year without the knowledge of the City Council. The staff planned to build the theater, in part, with Coliseum sponsorship money.

Coliseum Director Matt Brown argued that the amphitheater will help pay for debt on the new Canada Dry property.

Some council members said the amphitheater would generate revenue for the city at a minimal investment.

“We may not want to be in the business of entertainment, but this is an economic engine for us on High Point Road,” said Councilwoman T. Dianne Bellamy-Small, one of four council members who voted for the project.

But other council members questioned plans to expand the Coliseum complex, especially during a time of economic hardship.

“We can’t pay for what we have now,” said Councilwoman Trudy Wade, one of five council members who voted to kill the project.

Once again Greensboro does it to it self! This would of been good business and the city live on the Tax and Taxes and this was and will remain good business and what in the hell does church have to do with this... Nothing at all!
Small time thinking is the reason that all the HQ, that use to be in the area have move! OMG

Nancy Vaughn, Bill Knight, Trudy Wade, Danny Thompson, and Mary Rakestraw all voted against spending anymore money.

The other four are OPM addicts (Other People's Money) - thanks to Sarah Palin for the acronym.

hey guys, kill that aquatic center too... while you're at it.

Come on, this amphitheater is a huge waste of taxpayers money. It would be wayyy to small for this city. If you really want it, then build it somewhere else! I don't see why they want to put it in the ghetto.

The vote may have been personal with a few council members. Its no secret that some council members don't like Matt Brown and its a way to stick it to him. I personaly think the project should go forward beacuse of all the money thats been spent on it already. We can argue about how this went down without council not knowing about its construction but whats done is done. Now the taxpayer money that has been spent on it already has been flushed down the toilet thanks to a few naysayers. But there is a silver lining in all this. It keeps the idea of a downtown amphitheater on the table.

If youre so all fired up about this project. you pay for it. Its good to see council stop this illegal spending of funds for unapproved projects, The money already spent should have to be paid back by the ones who took it on themselves to start an unapproved project. Its just another form of stealing. Your statement saying that it should be finished is luducrois, Stop wasting taxpayers money on illegal pet projects.

Exactly...If YOU want this project to continue, get out and find the monies for it..Don't expect the tax payer to fund it. By Force at that.

The council decided not to throw good money after bad. Applause.

I want to publicly that the Council for its thoughtful vote on this issue. The land will be there when the economy improves. I hope that they look at the operational "profits" the coliseum was planning to use and see if could be used to fill the gaps in funding that is creating cut-backs in the summer recreation programs.

It is a shame that the city is cutting back its programs to the citizens while some council members continue to believe money grows on trees. Well, we have essentially deforested ourselves.

I am an independent. I'm liberal about some things, but conservative abouyt others! In particular $$$! I'm saying "Thank you" to those conservative members who voted NO on this coliseum iisue. Please, please keep shaking your head to those other idiotic projects the likes of Perkins, Matheny & Bellamy-Small come up with!
This includes that swimming hole! Guilford county doesn't have the money OR the leadership to "run with the big dogs"!

Vaughn seems to be the swing vote on every major issue. She has a lot of power with her vote. Vaughn was the swing vote on the swim center and she was the swing vote on the amphitheater. I am a supporter of the amphitheater project but council killing this may end up being a good thing because I would prefer a downtown amphitheater over one at the coliseum. This now leaves the door open for downtown when the time is right.

oh good grief

An idea for Matt Brown on recouping some of the money spent thus far on the "amphitheater."

Matt, carry your long-held motto of "If you build it they will come" to its logical conclusion. You've already "built" an "attraction" by denuding the site of the amphitheater of its vegetation.

Now, either apply water to that slope or wait for a good rain and then advertise the site as "Greater Greensboro's Mud-Wrestling Pit -- It's Not Just a Bottomless Money Pit Anymore!"

Get creative (as if you and some of your "buddies" aren't creative enough, although we aren't talking "creative" financial dealings here, are we?).

"Wallow with the Worst Wednesdays" has a certain ring to it for bringing in crowds to the new "slippery slope" at the Coliseum. "Slippin' and Slidin' Saturdays," "Muddy, Muddy Mondays," "Takes More Than Tide to Get This Out of Your Britches Tuesdays" are other possibilities.

If all else fails, turn that "pit" into "Greater Greensboro's Circus Minimus" -- pig racing sounds about right for the majority of the voting public in G'boro -- although it might bring "pork" (not the eating kind) to the minds of most Greensboro taxpayers.

As I watching TV news last night I was amazed. One of the first stories was about the city of Greensboro having to cut 57 or 58 positions to help balance the budget. Then a few minutes later a story came on about Matt Brown's amphitheater being voted on and the additional $95,000+ needed to complete it. Who in their right mind would be in a favor of spending more money when the city is having to cut positions. Oh yes, it would be Matt Brown the Greensboro Coliseum Complex czar. And you folks who are suggesting it would a another venue for all the wonder musical groups slithering into town, just look at that real big building on the other side of the parking lot called the Greensboro Coliseum, it has over 20,000 seats which are usually empty, fill it up! We don't need to add to Matt Brown's Empire! We don't need another facility which will also be underused. Use what you have!

I have a suggestion for that bare land. Why not have a "Community Garden". Something like what The White House has. When the produce is ready --- sell it to residents and put it in one of the city's numerous funds. This would not only help people eat healthier it would also lower cost of groceries to tax payer's. I am sure The Guilford County Agriculture Center could spear this project.

lkirkman - that's the kind of idea that should've been considered in a more public process. Matt Brown would have us think it was a "natural amphitheatre" when what he meant to site is that it's the former alignment of a creek. A small farm there could be a part of his Farm Market and Arts & Crafts vision. Produce sold could be part of the revenue.
My thoughts on this issue as presented last night: http://www.glenwoodobserver.com/2010/04/my-view-on-coliseum-amphitheatre...

Who decided the size of the ampitheatre and what types of bands might come here. It looks nowhere near the size of Raleigh and Charlotte. Regardless, very backhanded approach to getting this done. Matt is doing a pretty good job but last I checked the Coliseum wasn't a money maker.

Everyone knows this is the Bible Belt. They Bible thumpers must stop the population from sinning, The next thing on their agenda is to tear down the coliseum because Blue Devils have been there and the ACC is a Socialist organization that has taken over their country from them. They way this Board of Alderman panders look for the bulldozers and wrecking balls to be on site shortly.

laserguidedloogie

April 8, 2010 - 1:29 am EDT

Glad to hear it.

For those of you who think it's such a bad decision, feel free to buy your own land and put up your own ampitheater.

If it works, then great, you make money. If not, then that's great too, that way we taxpayers don't have to fork over to fulfill your fantasy.

By the way, as someone who is non-religious myself, I'm not bothered by other people's religious impulses. For those of you that are, I would say that there is more to your story than a concern for the fact that 98% of the world believes in invisible spirit beings. Maybe you should get help for that.
