HIGH POINT – The tornado that ripped through High Point just over a week ago caused an estimated near $10 million in damage, according to a city memo released Monday.
In a memo to City Council, City Manager Strib Boynton put damage estimates at $9.95 million and clean up costs at just over $1 million due to the March 28 F3 tornado with winds more than 200 miles per hour.
The storm destroyed 40 homes and businesses and damaged more than 600 others. No fatalities were reported.
“In less than 6 very short days, nearly all of the tornado debris has been cleaned up,” Boynton wrote.
“City crews, supported by hundreds of volunteers from at least 23 faith-based and other volunteer groups showed up without asking to quickly help our property owners and others clean up the trees and other storm debris.
"We are where we are because so many volunteers gave their time and energy.”
The city’s $1 million in clean-up expenses included $662,500 in personnel costs, $350,500 in equipment and $1,300 for other related expenses.
