Teacher suspended for writing 'loser' on student's paper

ASHEVILLE (AP) — A middle school teacher in western North Carolina who's accused of writing the word "loser" on a student's paper has been suspended without pay for two weeks.

Multiple media outlets reported that Buncombe County schools suspended Enka Middle School teacher Rex Roland on Monday. School officials say Roland must undergo "training in professional and ethical classroom behavior" before he returns.

Parent Patty Clement had complained that Roland wrote "loser" on her 11-year-old daughter's paper in November. She says she spoke with the principal, who said she would put a stop to it. But recently, Clement says Roland wrote that her daughter got 20 percent off an assignment "for being a loser."

Roland apologized to Clement, saying it was his way of relating to the students.

What a repulsive and useless so-called teaching method! This man should be ashamed of himself. I am pleased that the school system took appropriate action. Let's hope this arrogant human being takes the time to do some soul searching and self-educating to realized that this is the type of teaching approach and attitude that only encourages kids to either "hate" or fear school and thus give up on their educations. This man's approach seems to basically encourage young people to DROP OUT of school. Perhaps this man should change his career and enlist in the armed forces. He could use his "talent" in a more appropriate venue!

The following is an exerpt written by a REAL teacher! These are the people we need educating our children! Erin Marie Crouch is a teacher that posted her philosophies and early professional experiences on the Internet. What a wonderful human being and a gift to the teaching world.

Definition of Teaching

Teaching involves much more than the imparting of knowledge to the children in a teacher's classroom. Beyond book know-how, youths need to be introduced to the various aspects of socialization and other interactions with their peers and teachers. When a person becomes a teacher, he/she takes on the responsibility of being a role model to each one of his/her students. This positive influence can be the driving force that keeps certain children in school. A teacher starts to resemble many separate people in a student's life, such as someone to listen, someone to advise in a hard time, and someone to model.

When I take a look at the grade levels I will personally be involved with, I notice other aspects that need to be required for teaching to be complete. With young children, a nurturing and caring tone must first be initiates before teaching of book knowledge can begin. By modeling such behavior as honest and true concern, the child will be more apt to follow the same guidelines for his/her own life.

Overall, teaching contains components such as being there for your students, modeling behavior you wish your students to reflect, and being the positive influence that creates the best learning environment possible. The actual instruction of facts is what we measure teaching and its quality by; however, the lessons are only a small fraction of what teaching is all about. When considering the book information, a teacher must teach to each individual child. Everyone will have his/her own style of learning and a teacher must bring out the best in his/her students through the instruction.

Now these are the words of a dedicated and gifted teacher! Hopefully one day she will participate in educating folks for this profession. Teachers are amazing and need so much more respect and support from "society" than we give them. Perhaps if we respected and supported them more, we would not be reading articles like this. We would not allow folks that believe in the ridiculous and frighting approach that the subject of this article practiced to set foot in a classroom!

Very well said. Children are supposed to feel like they can go to their teacher about being bullied. It's a HUGE campaign that the students at my child's school have to sign papers saying they won't be a bully and if they see someone being bullied, they will tell a teacher, administrator, parent, etc. What in the WORLD are they supposed to do and how safe are they supposed to feel if their teacher IS the bully?!? Two weeks is like a slap in the wrist for this man, because he has been told PREVIOUSLY to stop doing this! This is not his first time doing this. It's creepy; like he's fascinated with her or something. He doesn't need to be anywhere near this little girl....period.

I agree. Our Principal had Bully Education Week but neglected to teach the kids what they should do if the Bully is an Adult. If you can not teach and behave, you do not belong in the classroom. It is a very difficult job but also very rewarding if this is what you like to do.

Well what would have happened if the teacher wrote under achiever or out of the entire class you had the lowest score. What's this students mother going to do when her kid takes the SAT and it comes back showing her child is in the bottom 10%? Maybe if the kid studied his/her books instead of the ads to see what was on sale at Wal-Mart he/she would have seen the grade of A at the top of his/her paper.

How DARE you assume that the child is an underachiever? There is no excuse for this at all. If you've watched the reports, you would've known that this teacher has harrassed this student in the past. He does not need to have a job anymore. DO NOT ASSUME that the child is not smart if the mother did not come off as intellegent herself. What a "loser" statement.

There is never any reason to put personal characterizations on an assignment or exam. Just the grade, and the specific reasons for the grade, and perhaps suggestions on how to improve.

If a student is not doing well, the grade will tell him. Ditto if the student is doing well.

Let me get this straight....this supposed "teacher" wrote "Loser" on an 11 year-old's paper and the response of the administration is requiring the teacher to undergo "training in professional and ethical classroom behavior." Really??? If I wrote "Loser" on any sort of evaluation in my business, I'm pretty sure the powers-that-be would NOT be coaching me on appropriate behavior. This is ridiculous. We are talking about an 11 year-old child being subjected to harassment. Suspension without pay for 2 weeks is hardly punishment for this repeated cruel behaviour. Given that Roland was given a warning last November to put a stop to the demeaning commentary, why wasn't the teacher simply fired after this last incident???

I agree. Any teacher would know that degradation is an unacceptable "style of teaching." It's an entry-level expectation. This teacher should have been fired.

Because teachers are special and it almost takes an act of Congress to get one fired these days. Why do you think the teacher's unions are fighting Charter Schools so hard? It brings accountability back to teaching and the unions don't want that.

Yes, I agree that teachers are very special and they have a very hard job to do. I don't really think that this teacher meant any harm unless he and the student have had problems in the past. Charter schools are not what the media makes them out to be. Most of them consist of low income/minority children whos parents are always blaming the school system for not properly raising their children. Most charter schools in NC are performing below average, attract lower quality teachers. Teacher Unions oppose charters because they take resources away from the public schools to try to perform miracles on students that have no desire to be in school

Charter schools are NOT all low performing. Hundreds want to get in every year when there are only tens of spots. If you think Health Care needs to be reformed, I think you need to put Education before that. Our education system is a mess. And the Teacher Union is so strong, it is nearly impossible to fire a teacher these days.

What teacher's union? There are NO teacher's unions in North Carolina!

My son was called "stupid" (in front of the whole class) by his 5th grade teacher. Unfortunately this teacher is still at Colfax. It happens way too often because a lot of teachers just don't care about the kids they are entrusted with.

I absolutely love the responses. Although there can obviously be no justification, it remains that we are hearing only one side of the story. That never stops the pontification of blowhards from passing all encompassing judgment. I blame it on the sad liberal attitude that has gripped our society of late. Sort of a takeover by what we used to call the "do gooders". It appears that we can no longer withhold judgment on anything, in spite of having only half of the information.

How much more information do you want?

Side one: (child perspective): Child comes home with multiple assignments with "Loser" written on them.

Side two: (teacher perspective): I wrote negative comments on a child's paper because I wanted to "relate" to the child. I did this several times, was told by my boss NOT to do it, and I did it again.

Hmmm....yep...only one side here. Seems you are trying to insert politics (liberal attitude) in a situation that is not warranted. The posters on this and any other site have a right to pontificate if they choose, without your blessing.

As far as your statement about these posters being "do gooders"...what are you an "evil doer"?...ooops, I answered my own question.

Sounds like the only real "loser" here is the teacher. Nice way to encourage young minds........idiot!

I think the teacher was being ironic. I find it hard to believe that any teacher would sincerely call a kid a loser.

When we were kids, I used to condition my younger sister this way. I would make absurd claims that she could counter with complete confidence. For example, sometimes when she expressed an opinion about something, I would insist that it was not her opinion.

"I like the color yellow," she'd say.

"No, you don't. You like no other color but red," I'd insist.

"I hate red. I like yellow."

"You're wrong. Stop being stupid! Or else!"

"Or else WHAT?"

"You're going to get IT!"

"Ooh, what will I get?"

"You know what you're going to get. You know. IT!"

"No, I don't know. What is IT?"

I liked giving her empty threats and calling her stupid when it was clear that she was not being stupid. I did this to condition her.

By calling my sister stupid when she knew she wasn't, I took away most of the power the word (or similar words) could have had over her.

The kid in Asheville got a grade of 80% on her assignment. If the teacher really felt compelled enough to sincerely (and stupidly) call his student a loser, why would he give her a passing grade?

After closely examining the quote at the end of the third paragraph, I find that the only person calling the kid a loser is the parent.

I lilve in Union County NC and you better believe there are Teachers who Bully students every day. My child has a 6th Grade Math teacher who has called Students names from Day 1 and no matter how much I complain, he still stands in that classroom. How about "Wimpy Snot Boy", "Train Tracks or Shiny Mouth", "Squinty" or "Shorty and Shortstop". This Teacher is an insult to the rest of the professional teachers. No matter how many complaints have been brought to the attention of the school, he seems to be exempt from the Policies of the School District. This teacher makes inapproriate comments to students, talks about fantasy football, grabs kids by the collar and throws books. There is NO excuse for this behavior - find a new job if you do not like kids and teaching. I knew the teacher in Asheville would not get fired and thankfully he got a slap on the wrist and he got exposed. The parents that defend his writing loser obviously have no idea how much a comment like that hurts a child.
