Oops! Glitch puts porn preview on kids channels

Tuesday, March 16, 2010
(Updated 12:08 pm)

RALEIGH — An "equipment failure" caused preview clips for adult programming to appear on two channels dedicated for kids in North Carolina, a spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable Inc. said today.

The problem lasted about two hours Tuesday morning in areas around Raleigh and several parents called to report it, company spokeswoman Melissa Buscher said.

Buscher said the problem appeared on two "Kids on Demand" channels that were showing viewers a list of children's programming such as Dora the Explorer. She said the titles didn't match up with the preview videos appearing in the right-hand corner of the screen.

"Instead of being a preview for kids programming, you got a preview of adult programming," she said.

Buscher said the company regrets the glitch and has fixed the problem so it won't happen again. The company heard reports of the error in Cary, Morrisville, Garner and Goldsboro.

I agree. This type of videos/entertainment should not be allowed as an option. If a person wants to view that type of material they should have to go to a specialty store, etc. It angers me to think that Adult on Demand is even on Time Warner Cable lineup - it just makes porn too accessible. I hope my bill each month does not go to the up keep of such channels. "Mistakes" like the one stated above should be followed by a heavy fine from the company. Pay the fine to places that promote child literacy programs, books for underprivileged, etc.

If you don't like the Adult on Demand being on cable, just get yourself a converter box and watch the over the air channels. That way you aren't "supporting" a company that has that type of programming. If you don't call and cancel your cable today, you are just a hypocrite who is looking for something to gripe about.

Kids shouldn't be in front of the TV. They should be in school, playing outside, reading a book........

There is nothing wrong with adult entertainment. It should not have been shown on the Kids on Demand channels. That was a technical glitch. But to just blast this type of entertainment because you don't like it, or secretly do like it, is wrong.
Most of you who comment about it being bad or wrong are also the ones who are very religious and try to scare the rest of the world into your beliefs. If you don't like it, don't watch it. I don't like soccer, so I don't watch it. See how easy that is.

When soccer is as harmful as porn, then your statement will make sense. Until then...
Porn Addiction - Why is it a Problem?
The problem with porn addiction is mostly one of altered perception. Continued exposure to pornography changes the user's view of the people around them. Men using pornography tend to see women (and sometimes children) as sexual objects rather than as valuable people to be honored and respected.

In a marriage relationship, pornography can drive a wedge between the man and wife. Although it may be used initially to add "excitement" to the marriage, the progressive nature of pornography can lead a relationship down paths that one partner may not wish to travel.

Porn is no more harmful than any other form of entertainment. Going by your assumption, watching a tv show or movie with violence, or even the evening news, is harmful and leads to an altered perception. I guess listening to any kind of music is out of the question also. People who claim that it is an addiction and has made them do anything out of the "ordinary" are just too ashamed or unwilling to admit that they are at fault for their behavior. It is just like someone who has been arrested several times for DUI and claiming they have an addiction to alcohol. They just don't take the responsibility for themselves. Society has allowed everything to be labeled an "addiction" so that those involved can say it wasn't their fault. And in a marriage, anything can drive a wedge between the man and wife. Kids, money, in-laws, friends, work, religion, politics, etc... all of these things plus others are a lot more stressful on a marriage than pornography. Any of those can be used as an "excuse" to end a relationship.

studies have shown that exposure to violent tv, movies & video games does cause problems, does warp perception of reality. You do have to be careful of what you listen to / watch in the form of entertainment. Unless now we are a society of anything goes...and who cares about the consequences to our children.

As with any other form of entertainment, if you can't handle distinguish between reality and a movie, tv, video game, etc... Then you should be confined and watched 24/7. That is one thing that is wrong today. Everyone thinks that it is tv, movies, games, and music that is causing people to do stupid things. It is just the fact that they are stupid to begin with or are prone to violence. I don't think that Billy the Kid was playing a first person shooter and that lead to him killing people. I don't thing that John Dillinger or Bonnie and Clyde were playing Grand Theft Auto and thought that would be a fun way to live. Those who don't want to take responsibility for their own actions try to blame entertainment or society for their actions. The easiest way for someone not to be offended is just don't watch something if you don't like it. Take responsibility for yourself. Let others choose what they want to watch or play. I grew up watching the old horror movies, like The Mummy and Frankentein. I didn't run out to a graveyard and dig up body parts to build my own monster. I was taught the difference in reality and fiction. Those who can't distinguish between the two need to be isolated from the rest of the world.

Libertarians rightly concede that one’s freedom must end at the point at which it starts to impinge upon another person’s, but they radically underestimate how easily this happens. So even if the libertarian principle of “an it harm none, do as thou wilt,” is true, it does not license the behavior libertarians claim. Consider pornography: libertarians say it should be permitted because if someone doesn’t like it, he can choose not to view it. But what he can’t do is choose not to live in a culture that has been vulgarized by it.

But yet, we have to live in a society that has been vulgarized by religious bigotry and hatred. Sort of the pot calling the kettle scenario, don't you think. If you could remove religion from the world, it would be a better place. How many wars and atrocities have been committed in the name of some god or another?

I don't think anyone is debating that it is was inappropriate for it to have been accidentally shown for a few hours at schools. However, kids probably get the same eyeful at any grocery store magazine isle, MTV show, etc. It's not a secret. Boys have penis's and girls have vagina's. I'm not sure if it's the parents or the kids that need to grow up more. But looking at some of these comments, geeze when did Greensboro get so many prudes. :-/

Greensboro has ALWAYS been located in the "Bible Belt" as far as I know... Geez - since when did showing porn to children become OK?

"The problem lasted about two hours"

See, this is surprising to me, and it is even more surprising that anyone noticed. I mean, the average length of time people watch hotel porn is 12 minutes. I'm surprised these kids just didn't change the channel to ESPN and take a nap.
