The Yellow Jackets did a masterful job of containing ACC Player of the Year Greivis Vasquez, holding him to 6-of-21 shooting, 17 points, four assists and three rebounds -- all below his regular-season averages -- and forcing an air ball and a turnover from Vasquez in the game's final 30 seconds.

• Why Maryland lost

The Terrapins couldn't get consistent stops outside of their full-court press. The Yellow Jackets hit 62 percent of their shots in the first half, when Maryland struggled from the field and couldn't set up its press. But during the Terps' 19-5 run to get back into the game, the press helped force turnovers on 10 of Georgia Tech's first 13 possessions of the second half. Once Maryland's shooters cooled late in the half, limiting opportunities to set up the press, the defense cooled, too.

With Maryland trailing 67-64, Tech point guard Iman Shumpert stripped Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez as he pulled up for a 3-point attempt and ran down the loose ball, forcing Vasquez to pull on Shumpert's jersey to stop the breakaway. Iman made one of the two ensuing free throws to seal the victory.

Iman Shumpert's defensive play at the end of the game made the difference, but Shumpert put aside his image as an erratic offensive player to hit four of eight field goals for a team-leading 14 points and help keep Georgia Tech in front for most of the game.

Georgia Tech committed a season-high 25 turnovers in the victory. The Yellow Jackets are 6-2 this season when committing 20 or more turnovers in game. ... Maryland guard Eric Hayes dished out two assists Friday night to become the sixth player in Maryland history with 600 career assists. ... The Terrapins shot below 40 percent from the field (37.3 percent) for only the fourth time this season. Maryland is 0-4 in those games, with the previous losses coming against Cincinnati, Duke and Clemson.
