ACC women's notes: Wake's guard 'money' from way downtown

GREENSBORO — If the opening game of the ACC Women's Tournament goes down to a long-distance buzzer-beater, Wake Forest's Courteney Morris could take the shot.

Based on Wednesday's practice session, anyway.

Morris, a senior guard from Riverdale, Md., was the only Deacon to hit a half-court shot in their final practice drill.

"It's just something to loosen up before games," she said later.

The team, including trainers and coaches, tried halfcourt shots Wednesday while coach Mike Petersen shouted a hypothetical score. Then he launched a shot.

"Money!" he said upon his release.

The ball clanged off the back of the rim and bounced away.

"I've hit it at least three this year," Morris said about her half-court attempts. "It hasn't been my year for halfies."

Boston College junior forward Stefanie Murphy could be considered a threat, if one uses similar criteria. She hit a midcourt shot later in the day during a similar drill with her team.

WHOSE HOUSE? Sylvia Hatchell, UNC's coach, gathered her team around midcourt during practice in the Greensboro Coliseum on Wednesday.

After a short chat about the next drill, she lowered her voice.

"This is our house," she said.

In a way, she's not far from the truth. The Tar Heels have won four of the last five ACC tournament championships. Since the tournament began its stand here in 2000, Hatchell's team has missed playing in the final twice.

The first season in which they didn't make the championship was 2001, when Duke topped N.C. State. And UNC missed it again in 2009, when Maryland beat Duke.

WEATHER CANCELLATION: A scheduled visit by the Miami women's team to Alderman Elementary was canceled because Guilford County Schools were closed for the day.

The school was selected after winning a contest in conjunction with the Newspapers in Education program sponsored by the News & Record. The program, which began in 1930, uses newspapers as a part of the teaching curriculum.

Staff writers Ed Hardin and Gerald Witt contributed to this report.
