State auditor behind on property taxes

RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina's top financial watchdog has fallen behind on paying the property taxes she owes on her Raleigh home.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday state auditor Beth Wood owes Wake County about $1,200. The tax bill was due in September and started accruing interest last month.

The Democrat is a certified public accountant who took office last year. Wood says she borrowed $90,000 to pump into her campaign, and she's like other average people trying to juggle debts.

Wood makes $123,000 a year as state auditor. She says her personal finances are irrelevant to her work in state government.

Irrelevant? Beth Wood needs to resign immediately. She can always go to work for the Obama administration.

You can't expect other people to behave responsibly if you don't do it yourself. She should apologize and own her failure to pay taxes instead of making excuses.

I don't expect perfection; just accountability.

Not paying her property taxes is a disgrace given her specific taxpayer-funded position.

Panacea, great pun on the "accountability" word.

Her responsibility to pay property tax should come first. Then, she can address her campaign issues. Position should not dictate which obligation should be delayed. An individual who makes $123,000.00 per year is way above average on the North Carolina income average. I believe that she should resign. I find it incredible that she considers herself an average individual with debts. When you campaign and take a public position, you can no longer be considered average. Pay you bills. Your governor is slowing down the payment of tax refunds at the state level. Wake County uses your property tax to pay county services.
