UNCG gets beat on the offensive boards

— UNCG was undone by its own generosity Monday night.

Western Carolina had 22 offensive rebounds and converted them into 22 points, beating the Spartans 75-70 in the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Spartans managed 15 offensive rebounds for 14 points, but their minus-eight deficit there was the most crucial game statistic.

"We pride ourselves on that, too," UNCG coach Mike Dement said. "Those games against ACC teams, we learned to box out hard."

Not this time. Offensive rebounds played a big role in the game's key stretch. After UNCG shook off a sluggish first half and rallied to tie the game at 34 early in the second, the Cats struck back.

Up by two, the Cats missed twice, rebounded twice, and finally turned the possession into a layup and free throw by Jake Robinson.

Those points were part of a 10-2 run that put the Cats back in control, 44-37, and they maintained a cushion the rest of the way.

"We have to knuckle down and get better defensively," UNCG's Kyle Randall said. "It's getting more physical now, and some fouls that were maybe called at the beginning of the season aren't being called now."

Randall did everything he could to keep the Spartans close, scoring 18 of his 20 points in the second half and adding nine rebounds and three assists.

UNCG lost its fourth straight and eighth in its last 10 games. Overall, the Spartans dropped to 5-20, their second straight season of 20 losses. They're 10-45 in that stretch.

UNCG is 4-10 in the North Division of the SoCon and 3-10 in the Coliseum. The last record is the one that bothers Dement the most.

"It would help if we took a little more pride in being at home," Dement said. "We have one more chance to do that. It's something we haven't done for two years now."

Things don't let up for the Spartans, who play their next three games on the road (Elon, The Citadel, Davidson) before wrapping up the regular season against Georgia Southern in the Coliseum in two weeks.

Western came in on a downswing. The Cats seemed to have peaked on Dec. 12, when they were 10-1 after winning at Louisville. They were 8-7 since, including three straight losses. Now they're 19-8 overall, 9-6 and in second place in the North Division.

"We're not back to where we were, but I thought we took some steps forward tonight," Western Carolina coach Larry Hunter said.

Another game another lost, come on Dement go out and earn your paycheck. 4 wins is pathetic, I wonder if anyone went to the game. I guess with the budget constraint UNCG will keep this bum until his contract is up.

I can understand not winning against the ACC teams but only 4 wins in the SoCon....Something is wrong. I know this team is way better than this record. If they really want to expand this program they should put some effort behind it and not just move venues. They should put some money in to get a good coach, leading to better recruits, leads to more wins, = better attendance and more revenues for the school.

To get a new coach here of the caliber that most people would want, it will probably cost $1 mil up front. It will probably cost another $2 mil of future program upgrades that UNCG will have to promise to lure the coach here. Not trying to be negative, just realistic. The Spartan Club can't pony up that kind of money and the students/parents won't tollerate that kind of increase in fees or tuition. So I wouldn't expect a change.

3 million isn't a lot in the long run. The extra ticket sales, TV appearances, and merch sales should more than pay for it with in a couple years.....Assuming we get the talent we want.

$3 million is a lot for an athletics department with a ~$9 million budget overall. I agree with you that it could be worth it in the long run. But that question still stands is ... Where is that money going to come from initially?

I think we can get a decent coach at 500k a year, I mean we were only paying Fran 225k a year and he's a great coach. I don't think its asking a lot to get someone like Fran or even better a Buzz Peterson at Appy State. I just want the team to be competitive. I'm a realist, UNCG will never be a bball powerhouse but lets at least be competitive every year. Geesh

I disagree. They could be the Gonzaga of the east, if they keep the tough pre season schdule. Then could run the SoCon easily.

You're exactly right that we can get a decent coach for 500k a year. Here's the problem, the entire staff right now makes less than 250k. I'll let you do the research, but I'm pretty sure I'm right. Buzz Peterson demended a salary at App that is more than their current football coach (the one that has won 3 national titles).

Coaches that have a name you recognize demand big money and big promises. They demand facility upgrades. They also demand high pay for their staff. Meanwhile, UNCG has lost 2 recruiting coordinators in 4 years due to low pay. The money just doesn't exist.

I just wanted to throw a little cold water on this "let's fire Dement and hire some big name" party that everyone seems to be throwing. It will be "fire Dement and hire an assistant coach that no one has heard of before" party.

UNCG can "invest" in a good coach, that's means pay him a little more and once we win the exposure/revenue will come. I'm just saying something has to be done because Dement just isn't cutting it. I don't have the solution, that's the AD's job, but as an alumni I want change!!

Well, I hope your an alumni that's contributing to the program through the Spartan Club. The money to make this change that you're demanding has to come from somewhere, and I've already paid my dues for the year. Guess we're gonna need some new members if we're getting a new staff.
