LEXINGTON — A Union County man has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the November death of a 21-month-old child in Davidson County.
The Davidson County Sheriff's Office said Travis Christopher Lemmond, 20, of 2220 Billy Howey Road in Mineral Springs, was arrested Monday night. He is being held without bond in the Davidson County jail. His first court appearance is scheduled for later today.
The arrest came after a Davidson County grand jury returned indictments for first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury against Lemmond on Monday.
The sheriff's office said the indictment stems from an incident on Nov. 20, when a 21-month-old child was pronounced dead on arrival at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Deputies said an incident involving the child happened at an apartment at 172 Meadowcreek Drive in Lexington. The sheriff's office did not identify the child or make public a cause of death.
It was not immediately clear if Lemmond had any relationship to the victim.
Mineral Springs is a town of about 2,400 in Union County, about 25 miles southeast of Charlotte.
