Seminoles agree to vacate wins in NCAA probe

Florida State announced Sunday it will vacate 12 football victories and a 2007 NCAA men's track and field championship in an academic cheating scandal, along with dozens more victories and placings across 10 men's and women's sports.

The NCAA stripped the school of victories in which 61 athletes implicated in the scandal contributed. The college sports governing body upheld the decision last month after Florida State appealed the sanctions as "excessive."

The men's basketball team lost all 22 wins from 2006-07, and women's basketball lost 16 victories that season, including two in the NCAA tournament.

Bobby Bowden, who retired after the 2009 season as the second all-time winningest coach in major college football behind Penn State's Joe Paterno, has now won a few less. Bowden finished with 389 before subtracting the five wins from the 2006-07 season, including the Emerald Bowl, and seven regular-season victories in 2007-08.

Florida State was allowed to keep placings in sports such as track, cross country, golf and swimming if it still had enough points to win after subtracting contributions from the implicated athletes.

The school said it would return all vacated trophies to the appropriate governing bodies this year.

Among the other victories vacated:

  • Softball: 32 from 2006-07, including two from the ACC tournament.
  • Baseball: 4 from 2006-07, including one NCAA tournament win.
  • Women's basketball: 6 from 2007-08.
  • Men's indoor track and field: Dropped from second to fourth place at the NCAA championship.

UNC FOOTBALL: Two days after officially signing a solid recruiting class, the Tar Heels received a huge early boost to their 2011 efforts. Elite quarterback Everett Golson of Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School gave an oral commitment to the Tar Heels and coach Butch Davis on Friday afternoon.

Golson, who also had Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Stanford, Virginia Tech and Michigan on his radar, made his announcement official during a news conference at his high school. An all-state quarterback, the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder, threw for 3,529 yards with 47 touchdowns and just three interceptions as a junior last fall.

"It was always my dream to be a North Carolina Tar Heel," Golson told reporters at the news conference. "And right now I feel like can seize the opportunity to do that."

Scout.com lists Golson as a four-star prospect and recruiting experts have raved about his mobility and quick release.

There are some questions as to whether he will be big enough to flourish at the next level. But Golson's feel for the position is not in doubt. In his first three seasons at Myrtle Beach, Golson has piled up nearly 10,000 yards passing with 126 TDs through the air, leading the Seahawks to 39 wins in his 43 starts.
