GREENSBORO – Several area fire departments received thousands in grant money last week from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

In all, North Carolina fire departments received more than $3.6 million through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program, which is designed to help strengthen the nation’s overall level of emergency preparedness.

Among the local departments receiving funds were:

  • Pleasant Garden Fire Department in Guilford County, $42,940
  • Franklinville Fire Department in Randolph County, $216,652
  • Swepsonville Fire Department in Alamance County, $57,475
  • Snow Camp Volunteer Fire Department in Alamance County, $42,275
  • Griffith Fire Department in Forsyth County, $33,072
  • Leaksville Fire Department in Rockingham County, $78,280

“For the thousands of men and women who risk life and limb as first responders, these fire grants provide essential support so they can carry out their mission,” said FEMA Regional Administrator Phil May.

“FEMA is proud to support them and we congratulate them as they continue to carry out this vital public service.”

The grants enable departments to purchase or receive training, conduct first-responder health and safety programs and buy equipment and response vehicles.
