GIBSONVILLE — The director of the Alamance County Transportation Authority spoke Monday at Town Hall to educate people about services available to residents.

The mayor invited Dennis Williams to the Board of Aldermen meeting to explain some of the services, which include rides within and outside the county.

ACTA has a fleet of 28 vehicles, mostly vans, and provides rides to the public for $7 each way inside the county. Vans also travel out of county for medical appointments for $14 each way.

Through the Dial-a-Ride program, residents 60 or older can get rides to medical appointments and one ride a week to the grocery store or other location. Vans have lift equipment to transport people in wheelchairs.

The vans don’t have set routes, so people must call to set up a ride. The vans run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. If a person calls by 1 p.m., he or she can be put on the next day’s schedule.

ACTA also provides nonemergency transportation services for riders needing same-day transportation for medical service.

ACTA is funded by the county and state.

At the board meeting, the aldermen voted on another public transportation issue: buses. The board decided to send a letter to Alamance County commissioners asking them to reconsider funding for park-and-ride lots.

Commissioners recently voted against authorizing PART to implement a rental-car tax or a $1 per year per vehicle tax to connect the county with the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation bus system.

The board also voted to approve a revamped personnel policy for town employees. No one spoke at the preceding public hearing.

The new policy ends the town’s step-and-grade plan, involving across-the-board raises, and replaces it with a standard job-rate plan. Department heads will have more flexibility in deciding each employee’s salary, and individual performance will be emphasized more.
