GREENSBORO — The national space program has awarded Greensboro and Jamestown schools a nearly $1 million grant.
Guilford County Schools announced Friday its Central Region won a two-year grant from NASA that will help middle and high school teachers develop science lessons using the space program’s content.
Starting this summer, 40 teachers will attend an institute at N.C. A&T where they will conduct research and develop interactive lessons. The university has a long-standing relationship with NASA. N.C. A&T graduate students will work as assistants during the school year.
Students and teachers will use NASA tools, such as the space program’s satellite data system and podcasts.
Terry Worrell, the Central Region superintendent, said the grant will provide teachers with valuable professional development that will result in classroom lessons that connect students with science and math.
“Some of our children are very scared of math and science so we have to find some very child-centered, student-centered strategies to show them the potential within themselves,” Worrell said.
