Leonard Pitts Jr. on the paradox of black men fighting for U.S. ideals

It is the enduring paradox of our centuries here.

It is the paradox that stood its ground at Bunker Hill, paradox that made a doomed charge on Fort Wagner, paradox that stormed San Juan Hill, advanced through the Meuse-Argonne, landed on Iwo Jima, liberated Seoul and was taken prisoner in Hanoi.

It is the paradox: Black men, will you defend America? Leave skin and blood in foreign lands fighting for ideals that do not include you?

Ideals like, We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.

And, One man, one vote.

And, Liberty and justice for all.

That paradox suffuses "For Love of Liberty," a moving new documentary airing this month -- Black History Month -- on PBS. The program is a valuable compendium of black military history. Through narration and dramatic readings, a host of prominent actors -- Halle Berry, Avery Brooks, Ice-T, John Goodman, Robert Duvall, Charles S. Dutton, LeVar Burton, Louis Gossett Jr., Susan Sarandon, Mel Gibson, Bill Cosby and many more -- recreate the often incomprehensible bravery of black men and women who answered when their country called.

We get the runaway slave Crispus Attucks becoming the first person to die for American independence, and 5-foot-4 130-pound Pvt. Henry Johnson single-handedly driving off two dozen German attackers. We get Staff Sgt. Ruben Rivers, broken bone poking through his skin, refusing to be evacuated, refusing morphine, and leading his men against the Nazis in a battle that took his life. We get Pvt. Milton Olive throwing himself on a grenade in Vietnam. We get tombstones, reminding us that freedom bears a price.

But over, amid and above all that, we get the paradox.

One story paints the picture: It seems that during the Second World War, a group of nine African American Marines in full uniform were traveling by train through Louisiana. They were denied service in the dining area of a local cafe, given sandwiches and sent to eat them in a room off the kitchen. As they ate, the men watched through the window as German prisoners of war and the white soldiers guarding them entered the same dining area to be seated and served.

As one of the black men asked in a letter to a military magazine: "What is the Negro soldier fighting for? On whose team are we playing? I stood outside looking in, but could not help to ask myself these questions. Are these men sworn enemies of this country? Are we not American soldiers sworn to fight and die, if need be, for this, our country? Then why are the Germans treated better than we are?"

From time to time in this country, one hears people -- sometimes implicitly, sometimes explicitly -- question the patriotism, the "American-ness" of African American people. We heard this most recently during the racially charged campaign of 2008 when some said Michelle and Barack Obama and, by extension, those of us who look like them, were insufficient in their love of country, lacking in fealty to its highest ideals.

It is always enlightening to be lectured on love of country by those whose heritage includes no paradox. One hopes a few of them will chance upon this program.

One hopes they will see the stories of valor and marvel at the sheer love of country this bespeaks. Not love for the country as it is, but love for what it could someday be.

One hopes they will understand how much such love it takes to defy the paradox. Black men, it asks, will you defend America? Leave skin and blood in foreign lands fighting for ideals that do not include you? And always, the answer has been the same.

Yes.

Sounds like a broken record and Pitts usual embellished pack of lies about the military now. Where would this race of whiners be without its unsubstantiated highly suspect revisionist history of such myths tall tales and fables anyway that continue to grow in size and tenacity with the years to keep the slave mentality alive? The old saying of believe nothing of what you hear or read and only half of what of what you see needs to be changed to believe none of what you see. The local Woolworth situation is living proof of no proof and even if it did happen it was due to a disturbance a few young radical idealogue college troublemakers were starting that was the full responsibility of the NYC owners of this large chain of stores and not the city of Greensboro using the local customs farce.

I believe none of what I see when it concerns your comments. Race of whiners? LOL

You have no idea what you are talking about. What "myth"? Every example Pitts used is the unvarnished truth. Racism is still rampant in this country, well exemplified by you. Pitts is just as quick to get on young black men with a sense of entitlement because of past racism, who lack the willingness to behave like men, and blame all their problems on "the Man" instead of themselves.

So when he feels compelled to talk about the real racism that still exists in this country, I'm happy to listen. It's too easy to get complacent about how far we've come when we actually still have a long way to go.

Please site an example Pan. I am not saying you are wrong, but I can not remember one off the top of my head. BTW, I noticed you were very quiet after I posted specifics you asked about the other day regarding quotes by Obama.

Of course I meant "cite" an example. It has been a long day, hehe!

My appearances are sometimes spotty. Please refresh my memory on what you posted, and I stated, and I'll share my thoughts.

As for this post, I'm unclear as to what you want an example of. I'd be happy to give you a citation.

The other day you asked Sawdust for specifics dates and times when Obama said "I won" and "I don't want people that started this mess working on it" and I provided links.

On this one I am asking for the same. When has Pitts ever been "quick" to get on black people for having a sense of entitlement? Thanks Pan.

Most of his essays don't seem to stay on the internet very long.

However, his book, Becoming Dad, is based off many of his articles.

One wonders whether TruthOnly knows anything about the paradox Pitts writes of. Were I an instructor of his I'd recommend he go somwhere and dig into history, where contrary to his uninformed views, he will find the real "truth" as this documentary explores. I'm not willing to lay his comments as racist; I'd prefer to believe he's merely uninformed.

It is completely impossible to rationalize or reason with the ignorant racist bigoted liberal mindset. This has been proven since ancient times. It is also redundantly impossible for the ingrained liberal bigot mentality to instruct the sane logical truthful mindset that only invaribly leads to corruption.
Listen to the true instructor. Cleanse your corrupt brain cells before attempting to comprehend reality and truth. Only once the brain is cleansed can the corrupt liberal racist bigot begin to accept understanding and power to know what real truth is incomplacent of the past mindwash. Technically transforming the corrupt liberal mentality is usually impossible since is so ingrained and deeply rooted in eternal permanent fixationist bigotry that completely clouds any chance of redemption.
Furthurmore the teacher can never be above the student and even then dealing and correcting the deep seeded negative complexities of the corrupt liberal mindset is next to impossible.
We know there is the extreme radical element in anything so this must be negated before even attempting to transform any ideologue mindset. We see it clearly in the Islamic world and thus an entire religion whether pagan or not is prejudged by the majority who judge actions only but this is reality and the way of the world.
There have been some liberals who have been cleansed with Xianity but still it is rare indeed.
The principals of other world religions such as Buddism, Taoism, Hinduism etc.
A guru is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority in a certain area, and who uses it to guide others (teacher). In sanskrit gu means darkness & ru means light. As a principle for the development of consciousness it leads the creation from unreality to reality, from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. In its purest form this principle manifests on earth as a divine incarnation (saint), a person with supreme knowledge about God and all creation.Other forms of manifestation of this principle also include parents, school teachers, non-human objects (books) and even one's own intellectual discipline.

In the religious sense the term is commonly used in Hinduism and Sikhism, as well as in Buddhism and new religious movements. Finding a true guru is often held to be a prerequisite for attaining self-realization. Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion said: "Even if a thousand suns and moons rose, they would be unable to remove the darkness of ignorance within the heart. This can only be removed through the grace of the Guru."

"Guru" also refers in Sanskrit to Brihaspati, a divine figure in Hinduism. In Vedic astrology, guru or Brihaspati is believed to exert teaching influences.[clarification needed] Indeed, in many Indian languages such as Hindi, the occidental Thursday is called either Brihaspativaar or Guruvaar (vaar meaning day of the week).

In contemporary India, Indonesia and the Philippines, the word "guru" is widely used with the general meaning of "teacher". In Western usage, the meaning of guru has been extended to cover anyone who acquires followers, though not necessarily in an established school of philosophy or religion. In a further Western extension, guru is used to refer to a person who has authority because of his or her perceived secular knowledge or skills, such as in business.

Reexamine your inner self. Liberalism is highly contagious cancerous terminal disease rooted in racist bigoted falsehoods myths and mindwash and probably less then 10% of those inflicted can be eradicated from this plague that is destructive to not just the individual but everyone who comes into contact with the afflicted including an entire race.
Only truth can be known when this extreme racist bigotry liberal ignorant mindset is erased although unfortunately for most it is only when they expire from this earthly existence.
