A no-philandering rule might clean out Congress

Monday, February 8, 2010
(Updated 3:00 am)

On Jan. 21, Ned van Buren wrote a Counterpoint, “What Washington needs is term limits.” Following that article, two young men responded positively and added their own suggestions. I want to also express my approval.

For example, unlike the Congress, I received no cost-of-living increase in my Social Security this year. But members of Congress wrote themselves a pay raise, even though there was no cost increase last year. I say, Shame on you all! You write a bill and then excuse yourselves from any effects you might suffer from it.

In addition to these gentlemen’s rules, I would like to add another:
Any congressman or senator would be dismissed from the Congress upon clear indication of philandering, whether with pages, staff or good friends.

My only fear with this rule is that we wouldn’t be able to raise a quorum in Washington.

"Any congressman or senator would be dismissed from the Congress upon clear indication of philandering, whether with pages, staff or good friends."

You are obviously well-intentioned, but the potential for Virginia Foxx and Michelle Bachman to be the only voices in Congress scares the daylights out of me.

Alright left-wing-conspiracy theorist, it's too early for those kind of thoughts! Hot coffee should never be blown throught the nose.

You didn't get a cost of living increase because the cost of living didn't go up. I don't care who congress screws as long as they stop screwing the taxpayer.

All term limits and "no hanky panky" rules do is cede responsibility from the voter to some arbitrary set of conditions. Mature voters must take it upon themselves to establish a set of principles and then apply said set of values to each candidate long before entering the ballot box.
Therein lies the beauty of democracy in a republic. We only get exactly what we deserve.

Unfortunately, Clue, that is not always the case. I know I have never done anything bad enough to deserve eight years of Bush as punishment.

Must be tough to live with a Bush millstone hung around your neck.

A beautiful, very profound statement, Yvonne! Applause! Seriously.

I've never done anything bad enough to deserve ONE year of Obama.

Your "one-liners" are improving -- but only a bit, danagain. Seriously.

"...we wouldn't be able to raise a quorum in Washington". You say that as if it would be a bad thing.

"Any congressman or senator would be dismissed from the Congress upon clear indication of philandering, whether with pages, staff or good friends."

So who among us is going to pony up and take Pelosi down?

You'd need one heavy-duty sack for that one. With tie-down straps. Pelosi's a major cause of ED.

Let Harry Reid do the job, after all they have both been screwing us for years. That'll kill two birds with one stone.

"philandering,"

Why is this an issue?

Don't confuse morals and ethics/capability

You have the most intelligent and mature response in this thread, David. Kudos to left wing and mike for the funniest.

The problem is that the American people have allowed congress to separate morals and ethics from anything congress does. We keep re-electing the philanderers, etc.

"Why is this an issue?"

It becomes an issue when elected officials disregard their duties when they are involved in philandering. Mark Sanford is an excellent example. Instead of being on the Appalachian trail he was busy with some Argentinian tail. Looks like NY Gov. Patterson has some kind of scandal going on too.

Another example is John Edwards. Imagine if he were president and was caught up in what he is in now.

And another is Eliot Spitzer, involved in prostitution, which is illegal.

Personally I don't care who anyone sleeps with except my wife. But when elected officials such as Sanford is not available to govern because he's traipsing around in S. America or Spitzer is breaking the law, they should be dismissed. That would fall under capability.

"disregard their duties when they are involved in philandering"

Again
I will go along with disregard their duties and criminal activity.
I don't really care about their philandering.
