Heinz gives ketchup packets a new look

Thursday, February 4, 2010
(Updated Friday, February 5 - 12:16 pm)

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The ketchup packet has been around for more than 40 years -- and complaints about it have been heard for nearly as long: too messy, too small, too hard to open.

Now, ketchup giant H.J. Heinz Co. is unveiling the first major packaging change to the to-go condiment.

The new design has a base that's more like a cup for dipping and a tear-off end for squeezing. It also holds three times as much ketchup than a traditional packet.

"The packet has long been the bane of our consumers," said Dave Ciesinski, vice president of Heinz Ketchup. "The biggest complaint is there is no way to dip and eat it on the go."

Heinz has long struggled to find a design that lets diners dip or squeeze ketchup that could also be sold at a price acceptable to its restaurant customers. For this effort, it bought its design team a used minivan two years ago to test whether their ideas really worked while eating on the road.

Heinz sells more than 11 million cases of its ketchup packets in the U.S. every year, and it will continue to sell the traditional packet. The new packet is in test markets in the Midwest and Southeast and will roll out at select fast-food restaurants in the fall.

Heinz is still working out prices with customers but said packets will cost a little more than regular packets.

Will they catch on? It's hard to tell, but the news may cheer ketchup fans such as Matt Kurtz, a 22-year-old student who finds the problems are as ubiquitous as the packets themselves.

The self-proclaimed ketchup aficionado became so annoyed two years ago after spilling ketchup on his jeans while on a road trip that he started one of hundreds of anti-ketchup packet groups on Facebook. He dubbed it "Prop 57" as a gentle poke at Heinz, saying it is to "draw awareness" to the packets' shortcomings.

"I said, 'There has to be a better way'," he said.

Great! So now the high school dropout at BK will hassle me when I ask for 2 packs of ketchup. Has anyone EVER encountered a situation in which the traditional packet did not do its job? I didn't think so. Can't fix what isn't broken.

We used to tear a corner off and dip one at a time to evenly distribute the ketchup along the fry. It was tricky though.

I will not use any Heinz product lest even 1000th of a cent goes to John Kerry.

@ravencottage.........I'm no fan of John Kerry by any stretch, but your comment is just plain stupid. Yes, he is married to a member of the Heinz family, but neither of them is in any way directly affiliated with the company nor receives any money from them, unless they have H.J. Heinz stock, which ANYBODY can purchase. This article is about ketchup packets, not politics.

giggity....Teresa Heinz Kerry's net worth in 2004 was estimated at $750 MILLION. Some estimates are as high as 3.2 BILLION. Where do you think she got this money? HEINZ! She is the heir to the Heinz fortune. By the way this is an open forum for anyone to comment. Who are you to judge ravencottages's Freedom of Speech ! You must still be upset that Kerry lost the the election!

Wow.....did I touch a raw nerve there, paulie? Please re-read my post. First, Teresa Heinz makes a lot of money in a lot of ways that have zero to do with H.J Heinz Co., and like you said, is an heir to the family fortune.....which means she gets paid when somebody dies. Second, where exactly did I manage to judge ravencottage's Freedom of Speech? I doubt you can even explain that one to yourself. I said nothing whatsoever about her right to post here, just that her comment was, in my opinion, stupid......which is merely an example of my Freedom of Speech, that's all. Third, how did you come to the conclusion that I'm upset that Kerry lost an election?........I did not vote for him, and if you do actually re-read my post a little more carefully, you will notice that it begins with: " I'm no fan of John Kerry by any stretch " Please dude, pay better attention to what you're reading.

Uhhhhh...you said it was a "stupid" comment. Hence "Who are you to judge his/her comments". So in my opinion you are a ignorant to the facts surrounding Teressa Heinz. Since you sounded off about knowing all about Teresa's jobs, (she has held positions with numerous NON-PROFIT organizations), tell us all where her net worth of between $750 MILLION-$1.2 billion came from????? And before you say its not her money yet, to educate you a little on finances, you can not count net worth unless you actually have named possession of the assests. If she does, then you are wrong as she does have money from the Heinz estate. If she does not, then you are wrong again since you say she earned the &%) MILLION from working. Nice try at a come back but you're absolutely out of your league. Please just tell us ONE job that she has held that pays a salary to the tune of $750 MILLION. Oh, and the interpreters job at the UN doesn't quite pay that well.

You go, jpaul. Gigit doesn't know, but Teresa met John Kerry in 1990 at Earth Day, her husband died the next year in a plane crash and she inherited his fortune. She hooked up with Kerry again the next year in Rio and the rest is history. But John & Teresa receive no money from the company??? They are two peas in a pod. Teresa has a degree in Romance languages and John Kerry thinks that France and the U.N. should control the destiny of the United States of America. giggity refers to ravencottage as "she" - I don't know, because I don't know you people. But, if that's right, I say to ravencottage: You go, girl. I, too, hope that not one penny of my household money goes to John Kerry! But, sadly, it will. Even though the 3 richest in Congress are Pelosi, Reid and Kerry - they will continue to take my tax money for congressional perks. A special "health plan" for them, best retirement plan in the world, private jets, etc. But will these "richest of the rich" ever give up their confiscated gains like Rep. Coble? Hell, NO!

This is a very important subject, so here's my comment: Heinz is over-priced, and Hunt's has been rated # 1 in taste tests for the past 3 years.

wscbd

February 4, 2010 - 2:06 pm EST

Hunt's ketchup tastes like a tomato stewed in a broth of garbage and skunk entrails. I hate when I go to a restaurant that serves kethcup in those little metal cups and when I taste something I've dipped in it, I must spit it out and ask the waitress, "What is this garbage? Hunt's?" Without fail, they lower their heads and say "Yes. I'm sorry. I don't like it either." Of the cheap national brands, Hunt's is the absolute worst. It's like ketchup strained through a dirty diaper.

giggity

February 4, 2010 - 2:49 pm EST

Right on, w........Hunt's is crap. There is a reason that Heinz has been a hometown family business for so long......quality. Also, nice work with the " tomato stewed in in a broth of garbage and skunk entrails ". Very fitting for Hunt's ketchup.

wscbd

February 4, 2010 - 3:50 pm EST

Heinz - $1.99 for 40oz bottle.
Hunt's - $2.51 for 48oz bottle.
Is there really evidence here that Heinz is overpriced?

edward0275

As I was saying before the two culinary sensory experts chimed in: http://www.chefsbest.org/ketchup-award-winner-7527.htm Isn't wscbd the one who was driving to Charlotte for 5 Guys Crap and Fries? LOL. LMAO.

wscbd

February 4, 2010 - 4:26 pm EST

Why would I drive to Charlotte for 5 Guys? There are 2 in Winston, and I only eat fast food 5-10 times per year. Sounds like you know as little about me as you do about good kethcup.
Perhaps you'd like to explain the "over-priced" accusation?

edward0275

February 4, 2010 - 8:41 pm EST

Yes,I'll explain. A quick search of three leading grocery ads, as of today, Lowes, Food Lion and Harris Teeter, shows two prices: Heinz $1.67 for 20 oz. Hunt's $1.50 for 36 0z. That's 8 cents per oz vs 4 cents per oz. But what's amazing is you ignore the Master Chef's award for 2009. I remembered your comments from Nov 10th, when you said that 5 Guys burger was better than Hardees and Cook Out. Which told me that (1), you have not eaten at Hardees in the past year, or (2) you are a self-appointed connoisseur with dead taste buds. Still LMAO!

wscbd

February 4, 2010 - 9:26 pm EST

That's funny, because the prices that I already quoted were from Lowe's. I'm not ignoring the Master Chef's award that you seem to think is the end-all of decisions. Know what? It means nothing. And 5 Guys burgers are better than Cook-Out, with both being infinitely superior to Hardees. By even mentioning Hardees, you have proved that you have no valid input into this debate. Thanks for playing.

What's funny about the FACTS? From this exchange, I have determined your political views. You are firmly in the group that whose m.o. is, when confronted with the facts, (1) ignore the facts ("it means nothing"), (2) change the subject and (3) insult and declare the debate is over (e.g. tree-hugging global-warming experts). I'll start watching for your comments on political articles, (and I don't think I will be surprised). Even though your tastes buds are dead, you must have SOME stomach to take 5 Guys lard-burger sans seasoning - good luck with that. This is all in fun, of course, and to be friendly I will share a new family-developed recipe: crush garlic and saute in butter in large frying pan; add a little chopped onion, a pound or 2 of peeled shrimp - stir until shrimp is pink, then add a can of HUNT"S new Zesty&Spicy spaghetti sauce; serve over angel-hair pasta. Try it and tell me your opinion. We're calling it Shrimp Marinara - but, whatever.

February 5, 2010 - 10:26 am EST

If you use pre-made sauce instead of tomatoes for pasta sauce, then your personal tastes are not worth my time. If I'm going to make pasta, then noodles and sauce will always be homemade. Anything less would be uncivilized, as they say.
I would love to see how you can judge my political views based upon my opinion of Hunt's crapsup. I'll save you the trouble of trying to guess my stripes. I'm not conservative enough to satisfy the vocal majority (but numerical minority) of American conservatives, and I'm not liberal enough to please the staunchly left of center. I believe that the environment should be the single greatest focus of international policy and research, and though I believe in global warming and such theories that the psycho-right rejects, I think that, compared to other environmental issues it is not the greatest cause for concern. I believe in a strict interpretation of the Constitution, using the founders' writings as supplements to support our understanding of it. I believe that the Executive and Judicial branches have too much power (not granted to them by the Constitution) and that Congress is too politically motivated to care that they have given many of their powers to the other branches. I believe that anyone who calls Obama a liberal has no idea what liberalism is, because we do not have a mainstream party in this nation that represents the Left. I believe that we should abolish political parties completely because most of the founders rejected the concept and warned that parties would lead to ineffectual government (I'd say we've proved them correct). I believe that the most powerful voice in American politics must be the people, but they, like Congress, have failed at their job. I am opposed to any law that inhibits civil liberties and personal freedoms, as well as any that singles out a certain class of citizen or treats one citizen differently than another based upon inherent traits or personal beliefs. I believe that any law regarding individual/personal/intimate matters is unconstitutional. I spent more than 8 years serving my country, spending most of that time overseas (most of my stateside time was spent at Hurlburt). For the last couple of years of my service, my home was Indonesia, where I served as a defense attaché during the Timorese rebellion. Despite serving my country, I have always felt strongly that the purpose of the US military is to DEFEND our nation, meaning that our entire military should be perhaps 80% smaller than its current physical and budgetary size.
There, NOW are you satisfied with my views on ketchup?

Zippy

February 4, 2010 - 3:41 pm EST

Ketchup. Packaging. That's what this article is about. But some right-wing bozo decides to stir it up, and then some liberal left-leaner jumps in, and now we have battle of the politico dim-wits. About ketchup. And packaging. Why don't both of you go outside, take a walk, and enjoy life for a moment. It really is nice when you can leave the arguing inside and only think about ketchup. And packaging.

In case any of you that are bickering like children over ketchup, would just think about people that have problems opening the packets due to problems with their hands or fingers. This will make it easier for them.
What children all of you are. Shame on you.

edward0275

February 4, 2010 - 10:27 pm EST

I'm sorry, you are right - but we were just having fun. This appears to be a great change. Heinz showed ineptness by naming it Dip & Squeeze instead of Dip OR Squeeze. If you peel back to dip, & then squeeze.....you're going to have a mess.
