WENTWORTH — Rockingham Community College inched closer Monday to raising enough money for the proposed McMichael Civic Center after receiving a $250,000 check from the federal government.
Icy roads and canceled classes didn’t stop a handful of college officials from accepting the check in person from U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, a North Carolina Democrat whose district includes Rockingham County.
“It will help us move this campaign along, and it will provide a lot of economic stimulus for us once we get this thing built,” campaign chairman W.L. Pryor said of the federal funds.
The money comes from an appropriations bill approved in December that helps fund economic development programs in disadvantaged communities. The money can be spent on planning and equipment.
Miller worked with county and college officials in the past three years to secure federal funds for the project. The college initially sought $2 million.
“We were trying to find out what sources of funding would match up with the project and then make the case for it,” Miller said. “(Getting) $2 million was probably never going to happen.”
The earmark brings the college’s campaign total to slightly more than $5 million, far short of the amount needed to complete the project. Officials last estimated they would need $16.9 million to build the center, but estimates now hover around $15 million because of fluctuating construction costs.
The civic center will include a 1,000 seat performing arts theater, gallery space and a business development center and exhibition hall with space for work force training programs and seminars.
