Civic center receives $250,000

WENTWORTH — Rockingham Community College inched closer Monday to raising enough money for the proposed McMichael Civic Center after receiving a $250,000 check from the federal government.

Icy roads and canceled classes didn’t stop a handful of college officials from accepting the check in person from U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, a North Carolina Democrat whose district includes Rockingham County.

“It will help us move this campaign along, and it will provide a lot of economic stimulus for us once we get this thing built,” campaign chairman W.L. Pryor said of the federal funds.

The money comes from an appropriations bill approved in December that helps fund economic development programs in disadvantaged communities. The money can be spent on planning and equipment.

Miller worked with county and college officials in the past three years to secure federal funds for the project. The college initially sought $2 million.

“We were trying to find out what sources of funding would match up with the project and then make the case for it,” Miller said. “(Getting) $2 million was probably never going to happen.”

The earmark brings the college’s campaign total to slightly more than $5 million, far short of the amount needed to complete the project. Officials last estimated they would need $16.9 million to build the center, but estimates now hover around $15 million because of fluctuating construction costs.

The civic center will include a 1,000 seat performing arts theater, gallery space and a business development center and exhibition hall with space for work force training programs and seminars.

If we do not began to improve Rockingham county it will wither away!! In order for this county to advance we must spend a little. It should be wise spending but we need to get out of the hole we are in! We need companies that can make Rockingham be placed on the map. I can tell you one thing Rockingham county does not need and that is BANKS AND DRUG STORES! WE HAVE TO MANY!!!! We need more places to eat out (chain stores) and better shopping. Besides wal mart and the smoke filled mall! Wake up ROCKINGHAM ! and lets do something besides whine!

You are not improving Rockingham Co. by increasing Government spending. The Government jobs paycheck is money Government is recycling. Maybe they are taking the Green thing a little too far. Private sector jobs are going to grow this county not McMichael Civic Center. Eden needs clean water, but where are the funds for this? The whole county needs private sector jobs but Where Are They? The ones we did have are run out over seas. I've not seen a decent towel or sheet since they left. Brad Miller dangled another bone in front of the Commissioners again and they are salivating at the mouth to grab it with no thought of how to pay for the rest of it. The upkeep on anything is the big expense. What would your house be like if you bought one and didn't pay the electrical bill, replaced the roof, repair damages, upgrade it, and pay people to do these things? The big expense of these things is coming and if the County doesn’t stop the madness, we will be in BIG trouble in a few years. Companies are on hold because of this runaway spending by the Governments. They will not make a move due to the question of WHAT WILL THIS COST ME.? In this climate of Government spending, I would not even consider going through the red tape and expense the Government has placed on small business. Businesses are expecting the worse right now and they are becoming intimidated. People if you are applying and looking for jobs then stop the Government from spending on WANTS. This is like buying appliances and TV's and not thinking about how you are going to pay the light bill. A great way to look at this is you won a fancy house in the "Great Bone Dangling Giveaway Sweeps”. You go get your house and find there are fees, taxes, and more taxes on the huge thing that you don't have the money for these expenses. Do you take the house? (You don't have the option of selling it) You can't because you can't pay the expenses of the house. That is what these County Commissioners need to do. Give the bone back because we can't afford it.

This is just another example of spending lots of money for something that isn't needed. I can drive 25 miles to the north or south to see concerts or other events rather than spend earmark money from Washington. Brad Miller isn't doing Rockingham County any favors.
