Elon gets $1 million for school

ELON — Elon University said it got $1 million to support the Elon Academy, a university-run college access program for high school students in Alamance County.

The gift comes from Douglas G. and Edna Truitt Noiles of New Canaan, Conn. Edna Noiles is a 1944 graduate of Elon.

This is the couple’s fourth major gift to the Elon Academy and the largest gift yet to support the prgram established in 2007 with the Alamance-Burlington School System.

The Elon Academy combines an intensive four-week summer residential experiences at Elon with a variety of academic and enrichment activities throughout the school year. The first class of 22 students is scheduled to graduate this spring.

Doug and Edna Noiles also gave Elon $1 million in 2003 to endow the Vera Richardson Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life on campus.
